Looking to sell this SUPER RARE Type H Perth Mint Bar. Only 3 known to have survived and this is the only one that will be up for sale!!!! http://allengelhard.com/the-collections/lesser-refiners/perth-mint/ Post your thoughts of what this bar will sell for.... As it is so rare the price is hard to gage so please help me figure out a price. Many Thanks For your input. Kind Regards Bigfella
Considering that a business like the Perth Mint is a mass production type enterprise rather than just "tinkerers", how is it that such rarities come about? Do they just need something quick some day? Leftovers from a run of other production - e.g had a few ounces left over from a run of kilos and dropped it into the nearest convenient mould? ...?
Not so sure as I know the owners of the other 2 bars... Mine will be the only one that ever come back on the market, that I'm aware off. Any guesses on price guys???
I think some are prototypes and done in small runs until some person changes the design etc. plus so many of the old bars got melted down and are still getting melted down. Hey there may be a few more of these out there but so far these 3 are the only publicly known. Many Thanks Bigfella
The premium on the rare pieces is generally a lot less than you might imagine. True there may only be three of this specific bar publicly known, but there are literally thousands of different types of these 'rare' items - hence they're not actually that rare. There is no great artistic merit in it. Currently a new 10Oz from perth mint is going for $283 (delivered). If someone is a collector looking for that specific item (not overly likely) you'd get a boost, otherwise I would realisticly expect not much over $300
^ if that is the case then I would gladly grab it for $400, a $100 tip. I think it is worth a lot more then that though
Well the flat poured bars usually go for double spot - so $400 AUD or so, and there's hundreds of those. To the right collector I reckon this would be more in the vicinity of $800-$1200. I don't think Perth Mint gars have quite the collector base of the old Engelhard stuff, where $1000/oz for rare sizes isn't uncommon. Offer this at an SS meeting for $300 and there would be blood spilt trying to buy it.
Article from Allengelhard 02-08-2015 http://allengelhard.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/AGWire-THE-PERTH-MINT-INGOTS-8-1-15-2.pdf I think we are heading there with this bar... Lets see... Many Thanks GP for your input.
Referencing a new 10Oz Perth mint bar as a starting point, the only additional value it has is either artistic or historical - Such things are entirely in the eye of the beholder. To my eye it has no artistic merit: Its a bad mould poured sloppily. Its collectors premium is as a historical anomoly and as such the right collector might pay significantly more... but if you get $1000 for one of these I wouldn't be surprised if counterfeit versions started popping up because there is little skill required to reproduce that level of quality.
There has never been a known counterfeit 10oz Old Perth Mint bar ever made so if you can make them show us please.
Mmmmmm..... I think I missed the point. Wasn't the thread to be open about opinions on the value of "stuff"? If someone wants to play secret squirrel via PM then don't bother with this thread. Bigfella - any ideas yet on the value? I respect your openness.
