Hi guys, just wanted to introduce myself and say this site is very informative! I'm repatriating myself from Germany in a month or so and thought that buying metals to bring home instead of currency exchange would be a good idea. I have already been in contact with customs (German and Australian) and informed myself on the various rules, regulations and procedures. What I would like to know is, are there any particular European brands/coins/bars/etc that are hard to come by in Australia that may be a little easier for me to acquire whilst i'm here? Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated! Best regards
Welcome. I assume that despite your forum handle you'll be buying gold to bring back to Australia? Otherwise you'll be paying VAT on silver in Germany.
So many stuff that I can only wish I can get in Germany. But the VAT for Germany will probably kill any deal. Welcome to the forum!
That is correct Whinfell, although on legal tender silver coins here in Germany, from what I understand, only the dealers win/profit margin attracts the Umsatzsteuer (VAT) of 19%. (Example 10% profit on 17EUR is 1.70 then the 19% of the 1.70 will be added as Tax.) I am however all about bang for my buck and will not be gifting the German tax office anything unnecessarily. The two brands I see here most often are Heraeus and Umicore, there is also and endless selection of Perth mint products to choose from as well. I guess the question is, does it make a great difference in the end which "brand" you choose to buy? and does anybody know of any refineries or "brands" here that aren't readily available in Aus?
