Well there's your mistake right there my friend...

Everyone knows that much gold should only be moved by boat!

Of course the chances of losing the lot in a tragic boating accident are extremely high. :p

This is a common "romance scam". So common in fact that the U.S. embassy in Ghana has a page on it:

From another site warning of this romance scam (OP may not believe us but he had better do his research):

In all cases the Ghana stories seem very similar: Gold. Deceased grandparent. Problem with customs.

Just another variation on the Nigerian '419' scam.

    Your right!
Seeing as it's now only 22 carats I suggest you cut the tops off, stick them up your arse and convince customs they are a suppository carotene supplement.
    I guarantee you'll be fine.
    Best of luck!

Anyone else view this as a public service. Sort of a stupid/greed tax? Anyone who falls for this should be locked in the same cell as the perps IMHO

    Baab1051,

The reason this thread is attracting the comments that it is, well, is because they're justified. Sorry.

As a professional gold dealer I've encountered several people with almost identical stories to yours, that invariably get asked to wire transfer fees, then shipping fees, then insurance fees, then customs release fees... the list goes on and the amounts get bigger until suddenly the promised 22kg of gold has "only" cost $40,000 or $60,000 in wire fees - and the girlfriend/fiancee never shows up and neither does the gold/diamonds/rubies/whatever they're promising. It's one of the most common romance/confidence scams going, and a very profitable one for the perpetrators. Also common to see this sort of scam with people claiming to be in the US military (one specific case was the female Air Force officer in Afghanistan who had 20kg of gold confiscated from the Taliban or some concocted story - "she" took a guy for about $50k).

Please take this as professional advice - this is a scam, walk away. Don't fly to meet. Don't send a single cent.

Even if it feels in your heart that it's genuine, it's not. People DO go to extreme lengths to cultivate relationships purely for fraudulent purposes - it may have even been months and months of relationship before the gold was even mentioned - or you may not even be in communication with the person you think it is. I know of an individual who had an office coworker relationship with a woman, she moved overseas, and before long had a similar "I've inherited gold, can you help me with finding a buyer" request come through via email - he was black and blue adamant that this was a trustworthy person, he knew and worked with her - turns out someone had hacked her email and taken it over, she was oblivious to it all.

Love is blind, and greed insatiable.
