Would you really pay a 50% premium for a low serial number ? on a 1 gram gold bar With the number "8" or "88" I could understand But just a standard low serial number
No, I hate paying a premium for any reason but for a serial number would be the top reason not to in my opinion. Others may differ but hey each to their own
Depends what is 'low' if it was 3 digits or more then forget it, 2 digits maybe just a little bit extra, a single digit would be worth some premium in my opinion. I often pay more if I can find just a single digit, I have a few first of series items No.1 or 0000001 pending what it is. I like having the very first of something, I see value in that.
Now if it was B0009999 I would pay a thousand bucks for that. But only if it was a pamp 1 oz silver. Then again I would pay 100 k for a one kilo gold series one tiger. if it comes in a square capsule that would be worth double. Edit to add: does it come with a uv light/ invisible pen for security?
I'm with Chip on this one. (unlike his square capsule efforts). If #29 was someone's significant number, maybe a birthday, lucky number, football guernsey number or whatever, I can see someone wealthy enough not to care paying a $40 premium, even if they have no chance of getting it back.
Why do I get the feeling now this thread has nothing to do with the question asked in the thread title?
Same market that drives radar bank notes - I don't see anyone slagging those off. I did *very* well with some #88 bars - the joke in the industry is that 8 is a lucky number, because Westerners will pay a fortune thinking that they've got something the Chinese want There was a range of 500g PAMP minted silver bars when they first came out - I know who got numbers 000002 to 000010 - they sold them at a decent premium to a normal bar. Each to their own.
I purchased my first two silver kilo bars (Johnson Matthey) last summer. Wasn't expecting anything other than two kilo bars. The serial numbers on them are 000999 and 001000. I thought that was pretty cool. Anyone want to buy them... $750 USD.
I think any number under 31 has the potential for a great return on a premium.... especially if it's a Icon product. Everybody has a birthday, I know I always keep my eyes open for anything 28. Gotta think long term and what it'll be worth in 20 years...
Yes, I would pay premium for single digit S/N and pick #8 over #88 anyday. Now if it has fancy serial number such as ladder or solid, it would command heathy premium IMHO.
