I've never been to the Perth Mint, but I saw the below pic captioned something like "gold on display at the Perth Mint". Why is it mounted like that? Is it out in the open?
The retainer bars are there to limit the range of movement. That bar I believe is installed for use by the tour group, the entire apparatus is accessible only through a circular aperture about 30-50cm in diameter. You can see the aperture (out of focus) in the lower right of the photograph. The tourists can reach in and attempt to lift the bar to get a feel for the weight/density of gold, while it'd be difficult to remove.
I have never been to the Perth Mint either but as a guess yes. Silverpete can I please ask you a personal question - are you really made from Silver and if you are you are worth your weight in silver CGS
The joke is that if you can lift it you can take it home. They had something similar at sovereign hill. I nearly broke my little 11 year old arms trying to test their honesty on that one.
400oz good delivery bar. One of the few places that people will get a chance to lift one so they realize how dense gold really is.
I guess if you could squeeze it hard enough with your hand, then you would've yanked it out of the contraption. After all, they say gold is a soft metal.
