Best place to keep smaller objects like oz bars is to cut out the inside of a book (Shawshank Redemption style) and keep on a book shelf. Thieves are afraid of books and they never look there.
i think criminals ARE as dumb as we think they are... i have a feeling the people who broke into your house were kids/teenagers and 50% of the reason they broke into your house was the F***K shit up...
I've always thought the toilet cistern was a bad idea. If was robbing someone and walked into the toilet/bathroom, its probably the first place I'd look.
^^^ This is my preference as well. In terms of probabilities, this seems to be the safest option for most people.
They were not only thieves they were vandals as ego2spare said probably teens. If you are leaving home for more than a few day have a neighbor you trust to pick up your mail and remove any news papers left out. Also have a radio playing loud, leave an inside light on , you can buy a timer that will turn lights on and off at intervals leaving the impression someone is home, just a few of many things than may help deter a thief nothing can stop a determined one if you are not there. Sorry about your mom's loss and damages. BTY never use counterfeit currency as that would be a felony charge on the home owner if you live in the states.
Yeah, the toilet cistern idea is the sort of thing you hear from everyone as if it is some awesome secret for hiding stuff.
years ago my wife used to keep empty Jack Daniels bottles on a shelf but they were filled with cold tea and they got stolen during a break in lol break ins are not nice though! we had to sell the house and move because my wife didnt feel safe. they had been in the house for quite a time during the day and in a busy street, they were robbing more than one house. detectives requested telephone records as they suspected they had been using the phone and they had! We are still remembering things that went missing all these years later and when faced with a claim soon after a break in you just cant remember or list everything that was stolen. We now document and photograph everything.
Sux to hear about break-ins. It's the knowledge someone has been in your house that can be the most distressing part. For us, we are well insured. Not only that though, the household items are well documented. I used to write down the serial numbers but this did not cover everything like my wife's clothes, handbag, shoe collection etc (her stack ) A better way I've found is to use a digital recorder and do a walk through of the place opening every draw, showing every suit and shirt and dress- labels and all, showing every appliance model and serial number if they have one etc. I do this before every big o/s trip. It doesn't take long. Piece of mind. I'm also too lazy to do it every time a mix master is purchased etc. The SD card is copied to Google Drive and SD card stored in the SDB. Happy stacking. B.
Yeah the three KIDS (10-13 years) that robbed our house pulled both cisterns apart, only to be so disappointed so that they poured the toilet blue all over the light coloured carpets. Obviously they had not acquired a taste for liqueurs as yet as they didn't steal the grog but instead poured the entire collection over the sofas, beds and carpets. As for the pantry again they were disappointed so poured the entire contents of the cannisters of flour, sugar etc onto the floor. Could have smashed a window or taken out a couple of louvers' but not they crowbarred the key locked, brand new silky oak doors and busted the bulkhead. Two other neighbours faired much the same Lucky they were only children and not.......Professional Thieves
robbers mightve been known associates and has intimate knowledge of her schedule for them to be so thorough.
Did the woman in the OP have facebook? As for the security of SD boxes.... http://investmentwatchblog.com/u-s-...-other-valuables-it-finds-inside-those-boxes/ OK it's police-state USA but don't think it wont happen here as well.
Can the same rules apply for a private vault if it goes bust? Are the vaults that are run by bullion dealers any different to the banks? Does it extend to unallocated items? I'm not a fan of keeping much at home due to the break ins reported but there's only so much space in the vault boxes and they get quite dear.
Definitely dont go doing interviews telling people how much you have and where you work... Easy and rewarding ransom job here  TIM
