Hi, There are tonnes of these out there and I started wondering whether they're ever going to run out of all that "lost and found" shipwreck silver. Mintage numbers are unknown to me. They even made Britannias out of it, according to this source... Which also states 100 tonnes of silver were recovered from the depths. http://agaunews.com/new-release-ss-gairsoppa-brittania-from-shipwreck-silver/ Quite a lot of silver :| Here are the Gairsoppa coins I'm talking about... Would you buy any? :/
Don't know the total mintages, though they kept over 600 of the original (.999) 1,000-oz+ bars intact. Could try to do some math & estimate a wide range, anyway. Keep in mind, too, that I believe most of the recovered bars were less than .999 (.9-something?). They also did a special version of the Britannia (1/4-oz) for at least a couple years now. I don't have any of those. Wish they would do a 1-oz Britannia. The minting condition/quality could be a little better for the rounds/bars.. but given the design & what these are, I give them a free pass on that. The 1-oz rounds are pretty cool, but the 10-oz bars are *really* cool, IMO. I might pick up another bar at some point, I like it so much. A few various dealers carry them, but more familiar with the larger US-based ones.. JM Bullion & Apmex. http://www.jmbullion.com/search/?q=gairsoppa http://www.apmex.com/search?q=gairsoppa PB carries at least some of the line-up. Maybe also another(?). I think they'll hold their premium, and possibly even then some as the years pass.
I grabbed a couple for the novelty and a few gifts. Has a story around it so it's more historically interesting than most modern bullion.
Treasurehunter - here's your last thread about the Gairsoppa silver: http://forums.silverstackers.com/topic-48789-shipwreck-silver-on-sale.html
I have one, a pretty cool piece to have. I don't think there will ever be any real collectors value too it but it is a cool story.
