What does everybody think of these new 2014 koalas with the Chinese privy mark. I can get them for $37.20 but seems a big premium unless there is a small mintage? haven't bought privy marked coins before whats the general concensus

    I think it is ugly.

Koala coins in general are not selling well. Will stick with Kooka, Lunar, and panda.

A privy is simply done by the Perth mint to primarily bypass a "maximum mintage" such as the lunar coins for example. Everyone knows that the Perth mint can only make 300K silver 1 oz lunar coins per year. It is written into law I believe not to go past this mintage. If they were to add a design, it wouldn't technically be the same design, but rather a redesign and therefore they can make as many of the redesigns as they want to. The Perth mint, from what I have read on here, really soured the community with the dragons when they came out. Since it was a popular design to begin with, they very quickly sold out and needed a way to make more.....henceforth.....a privy was born!

The 2013 Australian Koala 1oz Silver Bullion Coin with Chinese Privy Mark had a mintage limit of 100,000 coins; the mintage was declared at 10,392.

That's quite a low mintage for a privy coin compared to the "privy-mark" on the Lunar and Kookaburra coins.

There's nothing new about privy marks, The Perth Mint have been striking these type of coins for many years; the 1992 Kookaburra Feeding Nestling was one of the first privy coins.

Privy marks are just ways for Perth Mint to milk more money out from the collectors, just like those colored dragons

How many colored dragons did they come up with?

Hey! You leave the coloured dragons out of it!

    But yes...:p

I had about 9 different colours in the end but they also came in different sizes and finishes, are we counting gilt as a colour?

They might as well come up with a privy for each month of the year.

Issue 1 privy mark for each month. Collect all 12 to form the set! >.<

    Because

    "Initially"

The 2013 coins were not available as single coins to stackers, they were only available in sets (OS).

2013 Australian Koala - Chinese Characters - Silver Bullion Coin

The design on the 2013 Australian Koala - Chinese Characters (1oz) silver bullion coin, consists of a circle enclosing a representation of a koala sitting in the fork of a leafy tree. The coin includes the following inscriptions, 'AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA', the Pinyin pictographs pronounced 'sh' and 'nin' meaning 'year of the snake', the Pinyin pictographs pronounced 'j' and 'xing' meaning either 'auspicious' or 'propitiousness', '2013 1oz 999 SILVER' and the initials of the designer Natasha Muhl 'NM'.

The total "single" coins that are available / held in the West is very tiny hence the high price.

For Koala collectors, the 2013 chinese privy coin is "the-key" coin...it's the coin needed to make a full Koala set.

The 2014 chinese privy Koala has a lower mintage (overall) but it's not as rare and is readily available.

Also..the coin has been wrongly named, it's not a privy coin it's a pictograph.
