Sound's like a divorce settlement. Will the Queen have to hand over her corgis?

Should be interesting to see how things pan out if Scotland does gain independence. The cynical side of me believes that it's not above the elite to somehow interfere with the process now that it is actually a close contest. Ballot papers misplaced or miscounting and such

Maybe Scotland will be entitled to a royal member who can be king or queen. Perhaps Prince Edward, he'll fill both roles.

The banks are not happy with the prospect of an independent Scotland

I can see short term pain for Scotland but in the end I think that an independent Scotland would be best for the Scots. It all depends on whether they can pull their population free of the English welfare teat and restore some pride and enterprise. The Scots have a truly great heritage and if they can return to what makes them great they could provide an example to the world.

If the Scots "want their gold", then who will decide how much is theirs?

If the Scots are allowed to leave, how about...

    ...the Northern Irish?
    ...the Welsh?

...and what is Europe starts to dismember? There are dozens of small regions in which there are much worse tensions.

    Atomization, balkanisation

Could Scotland be the "first nail" in Europe's current territorial system falling apart?

The EU itself is a nation state-packed entity - the Europe of the strong and the majorities.
But the states themselves include smaller entities who feel oppressed. There are lots of tensions within the states, regions and they're not coming to light.

Some want autonomy, others want independence...

I am not saying Europe's states will all fall apart.

But, if the Scots are allowed to easily separate, it would inspire others to break away... Catalonians, the Basque, the Welsh, Germans minorities, Corsica, Hungarians (who are the largest national minority in the EU, scattered in neighbouring countries), the Turks in Bulgaria, the Croats in Bosnia... etc.

And there's a lot more than you can see on TV, Europe is full of regional minorities. The borders simply don't reflect the nations.

Here's a map of Europe's regions and concentrations of regional minorities within the independent nation states:

I am honestly worried about the economic consequences and I don't know whether this is going to become a trend... but I doubt the Scots won't inspire others, if they succeed.

This could undermine the EU's current form of organization, of course - as a collection of nation states in which the strong rule.

And, I think this is what the BRICs and the USA would want - as Europe's economic rivals.

    Follow the money.

It's a huge circus to occupy peoples minds while a small group of people salivate at the prospect of profiting massively from the last remnants of the North Sea oil and gas reserves.

In the end, the nation will be left impoverished.

It would be idiotic to travel with passports between Europe's various regions.

Just looking at the Scotland Flag, will it be removed from the Union Jack?

I was wondering the same thing, among many...

So, that makes me also wonder: Wales and Northern Ireland are next?

What will the new currency of Scotland be?

Each denomination will have a different tartan. Instead of the Queen, it will have the Sean Connery 007 barrel logo. Doo doo dooooo

Not a hope in hell. Scotland is probably the most socialist part of the UK. The only problem they have with the 'English Welfare Teat' is that they don't think it's big enough.

If Scotland gets independence they will, unfortunately, go in completely the wrong direction.

Let me guess: you are not Scottish

I'm worried about the consequences of a possible domino-effect that might spread across Europe.

The UK might not pull the guns on the Scots, but... elsewhere this would be unimaginable.

    Half right :)

I have no real feelings either way on Scottish independence. Just telling it like it is. The Scottish as a 'Nation' are very Socialist orientated, certainly more so than England.
