Please check the capsules. It may be a touch loose. I am not trying to speculate here. Hopefully all are good.
Perth Mint, we indeed have a big problem!!! Capsules of silver 1oz goat are indeed a bit loose. To make matter worse most coins have vague scratch on 'Z'. PM really botch their quality control for these goats. U have to really hold the coins at various angle to see the scratched 'Z'. Since most are on the 'Z' it is strongly believed to be production errors. Maybe not a scratch but at least a poor polishing job.
First halos around the Queen's head on the gold goats and now this. I really hope the PM is not starting to go for quantity over quality.
Edit before posting. I found a real photo at Apmex and it shows the halo. To me, the halo is even more pronounced than in the Apmex photo, but the halo is noticeable in the photo. Apmex sent me the exchange mailing label yesterday. If the halo problem affects the entire 30k mintage, there is no reason to exchange the coins. Edit after posting to include Apmex photo http://www.apmex.com/product/84401/2015-1-oz-gold-lunar-year-of-the-goat-sept-5th LD I will try to take and post a picture today. But the halo is very similar to the one on the Queen's head of the 2010 Takus. Here are some links to ebay sales of that Taku. I have never seen a 2010 Taku without the halo and I suspect the entire 10k mintage has this problem. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2010-Fiji-2...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 http://www.ebay.com/itm/2010-1oz-Fi...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 5th photo is the best one. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2010-Fiji-T...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 http://www.ebay.com/itm/2010-FIJI-T...51644600882?pt=AU_Bullion&hash=item3a972fe232 http://www.ebay.com/itm/2010-2-Doll...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
Loose capsuled lunar goats are rare and hard to find. These are for real collectors only... aye Chip?
That gold halo effect has been around for a long time on numerous Perth Mint gold coins - I always figured it was an artifact of the metal flowing in the die under pressure. Have seen some very prominent examples of it before far worse than the photo on APMEX. A flat field is going to show up the slightest of metallurgy artifacts. Perth Mint is aware of the capsule issue - it only came to light after stock was shipped to distributors. Perth does not manufacture the capsules themselves - it was a QC issue at the supplier, and there has been a lot of sorting of coins at the dealer level when filling orders for partial rolls - both Perth Bullion and Gold Stackers are two dealers that to my knowledge have been doing this to prevent as many loose capsules as possible from being released to customers (because we care ). Perth Mint's minting staff are also now having to sort capsules once the issue came to light. I'm told the packing team at Gold Stackers have culled about a monster box worth of Goats that will need to be dealt with (coins are perfect, capsule is loose). Appears to be a bad batch of capsules just intermingled with good capsules - some rolls are perfect with no loose capsules, others have loose capsules randomly throughout, but they are yet to encounter an entire roll with every capsule loose. I'm not sure what the resolution is moving forward (apart from dealers holding back known loose examples), but I understand a supplier rep has been carpeted over the issue. Justice WA style A resolution will need to be found for customers who have taken delivery of rolls that were shipped before the issue was identified, that are later found to contain loose capsules upon being split.
No idea. I've seen it on all sorts of PM gold coins in the past, Lunar and Kangaroo, so it's not a new thing. Usually it's a lighting artifact that disappears as the coin is tilted. There was an issue on the 1/2oz silver Great White Shark where a similar lighting artifact appeared on the torso of the shark - looked terrible on the right angle, but it's just the way the metal reflects the light.
I just got my Silver Goats and the capsules are indeed very loose. Will this lead to toning??? Can I have these capsules replaced by Perth Mint (at their expense)? Such a big premium and they can't even get the capsules right. Not happy.
