Do you agree with this general advice for a new stacker? (Reason for buying gold and silver is for wealth preservation (& bartering) in light of the enthusiastic money-printing by the Americans, as well as the future general economic outlook worldwide. Liquidity is also a key consideration) Advice for gold: Buy 1 oz Kangaroos + 1 oz American Gold Eagles Advice for Silver: Buy 1 oz Kookaburras + 1 oz American Silver Eagles + a few bags of 'junk silver' Obviously there are thousands of different people and opinions on this website, however, I'm just interested to know if most people here would agree with the above. Would you agree with the above (generally speaking) or do you think there is a major problem with this plan?
Generally for a starter 1oz gold would be too much so think fractional would be best in that case. Kooks, ASE's and probably some lower premium silver rounds/bars would be a good start. And don't forget the high hopes and prolonged misery of TDM syndrome
Gold: Unless you're rolling in cash, 1oz Au is too expensive. I only look at 1/4oz and $200 coins. Silver: For barter: 50c round. For wealth preservation: 1oz Kooks/Lunars/Pandas Bullion Long term: Reputable bars 10oz - 1kg I don't really get the appeal of ASEs... Boring to look at, zero Numi value, still a premium. If you just want bullion value, 10oz bars are a lot better. If you want the ability to barter, 50c rounds are better. If you want wealth preservation, Kooks cost slightly more but they hold their premium and generally appreciate over time (mintage of 300k Vs 30M).
I stack what ever i can get cheap! It depends on your budget. I dont think 1oz gold is a good idea as it is hard to resell because of the larger price tag. Fractional gold is best. In saying that i dont even own any gold bullion... 1966 round 50s are probs best for silver!
- Junk silver - Bullion: low premium rounds or bars - Coins: pandas, Lunar series, kookaburras, ATB, somolian elephants Avoid graded and numismatics unless you have the funds strictly for collecting. Once you buy one, you'll get suckered into buying a bunch more and these types of PM cost the most for the least amount of physical metal.
ASEs are for those who buy strongly into SHTF - to use as money, and if they live in the States. I have friends who buy nothing else, and are certain SHTF is imminent. I also have friends who question the sanity of anyone stacking silver. SML are also well liked by some Gringo stackers for the same reason, especially those close to Canada. Many more interesting (read: collector interest if no SHTF) silver coins and rounds, but for the novice, your native 1 oz is good insurance, and an easy start, to grow out of as soon as possible. Many directions to go, all good.
I just started and have gotten a whole bunch of everything to start so I can find out what I like more. I have a variety of 1oz bars, 1oz rounds, ASEs, 3oz poured, 5oz round, 10oz bars and a 100oz bar. Hand full of junk silver aswell. My stack is quite a mess but I get bored of one thing. I like the 10oz bars alot, they have a nice feel. I like the generic rounds because I can get a differant variety so I dont get bored looking at them for cheap. The 100oz is nice but huge and not practical to sell. I don't understand why people buy American Silver Eagles over Generic rounds. Generic round costs me about .70 or less over spot and sell back for .50 under spot. The silver eagles at like 2$ over spot and sell for spot if im lucky. I don't see how they are better unless they are the collectable ones that carry a premium. The junk silver is neat but for the price it has costs me to get its better to get generic rounds. I like it though because I cant hold it without messing it up.
You would think with low print runs the koala would be the obvious choice. but not really as it's not about mintages really, perth mint have low mintages for everything compared to most mints. it's the low appeal of the koala coin in general, the're not popular today and so they will not be popular tomorrow. it's cruel but that's how it goes, koala's have only been in production for 8 years compared to the kooks 25 years. they've had plenty chance to get popular but koala's are not generally a big deal in Australia, i think they were originally brought out to attract the world market because the're more recognisable, whereas a kookaburra is more closer to the australian heart, the sound of a laughing kookaburra is the classic sound of the Australian bush, a koala just sits around all day getting stoned on eucalyptus.
Interesting, thanks for sharing. Good to hear from an Australian's point of view Yeah I also think that the design for Koala is never as appealing compared to the Kooks or panda despite the koala being an iconic animal for australia like panda is for china. But for now I will still keep collecting both kooks and panda since their design change annually which is what i like.
It could also be that the 1oz Kook mintage is capped (at 600k now, I think?), while the Koala mintage is whatever demand drives it up to.
I have friends who only buy ASE, maybe have some 90% junk they would not sell. Here is what they would tell you: 'If (when) SHTF, American Silver Eagles will be universally recognized and accepted for goods. Some shiny thing with an image of a rattle snake, or buffalo, who knows. Be safe, buy ASE (or SLM/similar).' They have a point IF - SHTF. I have more SAEs than anything else, but less than half of my 1 oz are ASE. I think ASE and similar are great for beginners. Get a few tubes and move on in other directions. Diversify. If you feel confident no SHTF, then buy any cheap generic rounds to start. Me, I think the global economy is going down the tubes, but may pull out - who knows.
