I was hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction for a Piece of Eight coin. Seen them on ebay but the prices vary and I would like to make sure I have a genuine item at the end of the day. The other issue is a lot of people on ebay don't seem to ship to the great land down under. A holey dollar would be great..... cough... but that is a lot of cash. :/ If anyone knows how best to get me hands on a coin please let me know.
Other than raiding a Spanish Galleon eBay is probably yout best bet but there are a few retailers who specialise in cob coins. Lots of different types from different mints etc, some are rarer than others so the prices are quite variable. There are a fair few about and they aren't going anywhere so if I were you I would get a book on the subject and read up before you make a purchase. The book I got was about $30 and really informative. Perth is a bit far away to lend it but your local library might be able to get you something. You will appreciate it more if you have done some research and it will explain why the prices are all over the place.
the hard part with this coin is not so much getting one, but getting one that is real! this coin is one of a few that I will not buy raw of ebay as the fakers have been at it for a while and they put out some good fakes I would suggest a slabbed one or (and I don't often say this) a reputable dealer Andrew at Stirling currency has a couple and is the man to speak to with old proclamation coins (he wrote the book on them, literally!)
Back before 1966, Bob Menzies suggested that the new currency be called the "Royal" (or "Reale as it was in the olden days). He was laughed off the stage, so he gave that idea away. I would also like to have a 8 Real coin just for the possession of such a historical coin. OC
Are you after the 8 Reale pillar dollar like this one Ben? If so I have a great collection of them, & have a few that I would be willing to trade for. They are all dinky di high quality specimen's. one member here has had 1 XRF'ed, & it came up 94% Silver
Very nice too, I bet that has a few stories to tell. The one coin that I really want to add to my collection but haven't gotten around to just yet, no idea why not really, a handful of pirate cobs should be the start of everyones collection.
Silver Soul, It is indeed the coin I have been looking for and I am with OC, just having it for the the historical value would be amazing.
I got a 2 real coin from ebay and I paid about a dollar over spot. It isn't in as nice shape as the ones above but it is still a cool piece of pirate booty!
I will do metal trades only, no filthy fiat if anyone is interested in one. PM me for details or lookout for future listings on the trade board. I have 1 tube to swap out at this stage.
