Hello, So I got a 1oz bar off ebay. Its a Johnson Matthey bar and came in a hard plastic case. Its got no serial number, the area it should be is blank! Do some of these bars come like this? Looks like this
Quick scan of Google Images and yes, it should have a serial number. Could easily be an error but as you bought it from eBay... Fake 1oz without serial number are available at Ali http://m.aliexpress.com/item/1474835785.html?tracelog=wwwdetail2mobilesitedetail Read this thread http://forums.silverstackers.com/topic-41255-detecting-fraud-fake-bars-and-coins.html and eBay's own guide http://www.ebay.com/gds/BEWARE-FAKE-SILVER-BARS-FROM-CHINA-/10000000006905597/g.html
+1 on weighing it. Then measure the dimensions with a good pair of calipers and compare the weight and dimensions against what a genuine one weighs and measures. I think it unfortunately looks like you got Aliexpressed. If you paid for that thing with a credit card via PayPal, you may be able to get a refund through the Ebay "Buyer Protection" deal (?). It's worth a try, anyhow.
Thanks for the reply's. The seller has over 40k sales and 99.8 on feedback. I have a case open with paypal as I ordered 5 and only got 1.... With all the sales and great feedback I was sure I'd be OK. I'll weigh and measure when I get home and see!
Ah I've been had looking at the ali link...my bar came in a case plastic case. "1 OZ .JM JOHNSON MATTHEY Bullion bar coins+plastic case+seal PAKCAGE" Don't most bars come in plastic seal. Grrr
The bar weighs 33.1g. I've weighed my coins and they all 31.x. Bar size is correct. Ping sounds ok too. What to do?
Try putting a magnent to it. If it sticks send it back. The weight is off too. I can't imagine they'd give you more silver for the same price.
Weight is far too much over. Not many Mints are in the business of giving away around 2 extra grams of silver in each bar! From what I've seen, always best to stay away from bars in capsules ... it's the first red flag for a fake. Hopefully the paypal process will work out for you. Have you contacted the seller? Good luck! Please let us know how it goes.
Sheez if you are selling fake silver you would think they would at least send out the right amount of fake bars! Kids these days getting slacker and slacker. Make sure paypal/ebay knows the full story ASAP and you should be ok.
Thanks all, I did the magnet test and it was also OK. I feel so cheated Thats me done with ebay! I contacted the seller and she said how sorry she was that they sent the wrong amount of bars, she employed a new person and it was that persons fault and she'll send the other four out. After this I logged the issue with them being fake, no reply yet!
No. A UK seller, like I was saying above 40K sales and great feedback. Goes to show I guess. Looking on paypal the claim that I had open has disappeared...not showing as opened or closed,so I've emailed them to follow up. Joys of ebay.
