Given that he's from Norway I'd say it's a fair question. Espen, it's for those that have given their life serving their country and is what ANZAC Day is about. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ode_of_Remembrance
Fair enough, didn't see the norway thing. If its a RCM coin though then doesn't that mean this quote is used by armed forces of other nations. Perhaps a commonwealth thing? anyone know?
It is RAM...ROYAL AUSTRALIA MINT. still interested to know if anyone likes it. I do, but not sure if I want to part with $85.00. I figure I have some time at 10,000 mintage.
I saw 'Poppies' and as it is 100 Years since the start of WW1 I just assumed that it was for all the soldiers who died in the war. Poppies are worn on 11 November in the UK and probably in most of the countries who were on our side. No, don't like it. It is triangular, is that significant or are they just trying to be different? Poppies are red, they are happy to splash paint over all their other coins, might as well put a bit on here. The words are all different sizes, am I meant to be shouting the words in big letters and whispering the small ones or is this just pointless as well. In the UK some people are saying that the coin program glorifies war etc. etc. but as the most prominent person to say so is a Welsh politician I have never heard of I can only assume that it is not a large protest.
Outside the Kangaroo coins I am yet to like any of the RAM productions that I have seen. They are incredibly expensive imo. This one is a no from me. Edit to my post to comment on Jizlizards statements... I did like the $2 coins - poppy and the purple ring one - that the RAM produced.
Thats twice i've missread thing in one thread. I thought it said RCM. I'm deffinaley having one of them days. Aploagizes to all for my epic fails in this tread.
Don't like it at all. Not something I would buy. I used to collect the Kangaroos until they increased the prices.
What if the war was not just, such as the invasion of Iraq. Did they still die 'serving their country'? Or if they volunteer to join the army, were they purely mercenaries?
Hmmmm maybe leave the philosophies of war to another thread (feel free to start one) and let us just concentrate on the aesthetics and perceived "value" of this coin in this thread.
Sorry I can't keep up with your very high standards. I guess you think that every soldier who died in a war was 'serving his country', regardless of whether the country that was invaded (e.g. Iraq) ever threatened the country that invaded it (e.g. USA), whether the war was legal, whether the politicians had to tell a lot of lies to justify the invasion, whether the war was purely to steal natural resources, whether the soldiers who invaded the country were forced to join or volunteered/couldn't find a better job, etc. My apologies.
Agree. In my definition a coin is round. This looks more like a traffic warning triangle than a coin.
