While the above are obviously jokes, I must point out that removing a proton from every atom of 1 kg mercury, would reduce the mass of it (protons have mass!) So you wouldn't end up with exactly 1 kg of gold, even if it were possible.

Also, assuming you were starting from Mercury-202 (the most abundant isotope), removing a proton (and only a proton) would leave you with Gold-201, which is a radioactive isotope with a half life of only 26 minutes.

    Ok, pedant mode off :p

LOL :D everyone keep this in mind when you try it at home. Otherwise you will make someone very angry when they realise they didn't get exactly 1kg of gold as stated.

Not an issue, while you're at it just remove 2 Neutrons from each atom too. This will give you a window of about 3 days to quickly sell it :D Otherwise if you got a bit more time up your sleeves, remove 2 more to make it stable.

I wouldn't worry about the weight difference, just use dodgy scales.

I'm currently sourcing some now. Send me $100 (or $110 for registered post with tracking) and ill post one to you when they come in. Now they might look like the ones at the $2 shop but trust me they are not.

I'm shocked that it didn't come with the regular warning "Don't try this at home."

An old fifty cent piece walked into a bar, and the bartender looked up and said "Hey I haven't seen you round since 1966"...
