Low and behold, I have just read in MSM THAT THE GREEN ARMY WILL START operating from July 1st. pulling weeds for $500 per week for a 30hr week..One hr off for dinner plus 2 ten min breaks. I have already posted my comments on the last group of such workers that I had the opportunity to see in action...Will this be the Pink Batts moment for the Blue Team? Surely Tony and Joe can come up with a better idea than that. Hope that some good can come from such a scheme but I doubt it. However it will provide great PR for Blue Team MP's. Regards Errol 43
Tax free? If so, not a bad gig for those in need of easy cash. Hope it includes planting vegetation as well, as weeds grow back....
For no monetary satisfaction I pick up litter every morning on my beach walk and with this current relentless wind I've had to extend my walk time. I suspect the same people on this forum that feel it is undignified to pick up litter, are the very same people that also fee it is undignified, to put their rubbish and butts in the receptacles provided at a food halls and other public areas. I personally know two people whom finished Uni and Tafe horticulture related courses, could not get the job they felt they were entitled to and instead applied and got accepted into council trainee programs, which involved picking up litter, weeding medium strips and regenerating dunes. Within a short period of time both moved on to their ideal jobs, with one being recruited through tough competition for the Sydney Botanical gardens. As for myself, whilst on a biz trip to Beijing one time, whilst I was hoping to enjoy my day off seeing some sights, eating some nice food and getting massaged, my company took the liberty of putting my name down for a company sponsored event to spend my day off instead picking up litter at a part of the Great Wall. We picked up tonnes and my speciality was the thousands of smashed champagne glasses. No idea why I was chosen, but my photo wearing my "I cleaned up the Great Wall" T-Shirt appeared the next day as a full half page of the China Daily Newspaper. Okay no job offer eventuated, however I did enjoy 24 hours of fame (within my former company and my own mind)...prior to becoming yesterday's news and Beijing's next days rubbish.
" We picked up tonnes and my speciality was the thousands of smashed champagne glasses." I think they were left by komrade juLIAR gillard during her trip to the Great wall all set up in her communist cap. I do a similar thing in the park across the road, Every couple of weeks I get a big strong garbage bag (or two), and do an Emu Parade. Never fail to fill at least one. OC
I'm afraid your good deeds come to nought with comments like this. It is littering of the worst kind.

Every month, I too go to a Landcare outing to pick up litre and rubbish left over from the flood one year ago. All voluntary work but what a group of people. However while there may well be a few people who will benefit from such a scheme as the green army. Most will not. You have to have your heart in what you are doing. From what I have seen, these schemes do not work..You can force a person to pick up liter but how hard will he work? It is no big deal if you get $500 per week if you pick up 500 pieces of litre. On national tree planting day, hundreds of people with good intention roll up to plant a tree, the deed done, they then feel good about themself having done their good deed for the year. However do they ever come back to give the tree a drink? End result ? many trees die from lack of care. I would like to see monies given to Landcare Groups if that is the intention of the present government. In my own area I have just seen rag weed take over a swap where water is for much of the year..What will happen if heavy rains come now? Answer? The rag weed will rot and the water will become a rancid mess of rotten vegetation. Anyway, I do hope that the Green Army can do some good for the community. I think I saw him down at Centrelink yesterday! Telling all the clerks how lousy the Newstart Allowance was. OC
