I am looking to buy a 9ct curb link gold necklace.

I saw one online which is apparently an "unwanted gift"

    Comes with receipt also.

It apparently retailed for $4999 and it is up for sale for $1500.

Spot value of it is $831.

If I were to resell this necklace, what does this sort of money does this stuff sell for second hand? Around spot + 10% or spot x2?

Any jewellery experts which could shed some light on this?

    This sort of design https://webshop.cashconverters.com.au/item/1623751/jewellery-9ct-gold-flat-curb-link-necklace

I wouldn't pay more than 10-20% over spot for used jewellery if it is simply karat gold. You can get spot plus 6% easily enough if you need to dump it.

Necklaces seem to become more brittle as time goes on. This seems to fly in the face of gold's eternal attributes, but it's probably more to do with the other elements mixed in with gold. The more expensive an everyday (ie 9K) piece of jewellery is, the closer to spot or below it can easily be sold for. It's probably not worth more than spot to resell. Don't bother unless you or a loved one plans to wear it for a few years.

If I do buy it, I would wear it quite often.
I will see how I go.

jewellers are among the biggest con artists and mark up merchants on the planet. I mean as a profession, not necessarily individually.

They don't sell jewels or metals, they sell a lifestyle aspiration or attempt to guilt trip you into spending out of "love". Yes, spend $4999 (some poor sod probably did pay that) for a couple of hundred dollars of metal and a few quid worth of stamping it out into necklace form in a factory.

even if you buy at $1500 a jeweller will never pay you anywhere near for it. Because they SELL "expressions of love" - but what they BUY is metal - usually at spot or less from people who are desperate.

    They disgust me

To be honest I don't know why you would want to be buying 9k, anything less than 18k is just cheap crap in my opinion save up a bit more and you won't regret it a few years down the track.......it's the Gucci factor ...long after you pay the price the quality still remains with 18-24k....you buy 9-14k and you feel like your in a Hyundai. Trust me I have done both and the 18-24k gold is well worth the extra penny:)

Seller said I can have a second hand one, double the weight for $1000, obviously a great price but way to suss.

If I buy through eBay I shouldn't have a problem getting my money back through PayPal if it is fake is that right?

From my experience with Paypal, I've always got my money back. It seems that Paypal always judges in favour of the buyer - which has opened the door to some of the more unscrupulous amongst us making ambit claims against genuine sellers - so it shouldn't be a problem.

It's on the Today I bought thread!

You listen to people like shiny you will end up cheap and regret the purchase 5years down the track. I bought this when gold was $1550 look at the price now I'd save up a bit longer for something you won't regret
