I'm wondering why I can get a 2014 coin (Perth mint specifically) now even though it's not 2014 yet. Does the mint run on a mint year or something? Do other mints release coins early?

There is no law that says a coin can only be minted in the calendar year matching the year on the coin.

Some Mints already have their 2014 coins out. Samolia elephant/ Tokelau horse. I think the Kook is out and Rwanda Impala comes out at the end of Oct!

Being generally against new laws (or many of the existing ones as well) I wish that Mints would only produce the coins with current year on them.
This would remove the problem of re-mints early releases etc. This would also mean my Zombucks won't be from 2017, but I'm fine with that. :)

I think that some mints match the year with the topic, for example Lunar Year of the Horse is mostly in 2014 so that is the date that is more indicated for those coins.

Is this why Perth Mint struck and sold them out in 2013?

Lunar years follow a different time structure to our normal dates, too!

The reason some mints release coins with a future date on them is strictly marketing. It's no different from car companies that release next year's model in the Fall. Personally, I see it as not only stupid but very bad practice.

If you want coins ready for 2014 you have to make them in 2013, this I understand.

Quite why the Zombucks have 2017 on them I haven't looked into but it is a real pain. I give an oz as a New Year's gift to my friends' kids and they are really into 'The Walking Dead'. It would have been great to give a 2014 oz (to mark the occassion the coin was given on) with the theme of Zombies.

Hard to know what to do, it is an American TV Show so it could go on for another 20 seasons, getting worse and worse each time, or as it is quite popular it could be cancelled for no reason. Also the kids might not like zombies at the end of 2016 (but I can't really see that happening)

Whatever the case, unless they keep minting them right up to 2017 you could have a situation when the coins run out well in advance and people want them in 2017. I got a couple just in case they are not available to give as gifts in 2017.

Personally I don't like the practice, as it seems each year more coins for next year are coming out earlier and earlier. It's totally for marketing and it obviously works so "stupid" would be a perspective thing I guess ;)

To me the zombucks are a different matter because they're not coins (legal tender), they're just medallions with a fake denomination on them and I was under the impression that 2017 was when the zombie holocaust was due to arrive ;) Can't really have 2013 zombucks when there's been no apocalypse yet :D

Supposedly, by Providentmetal, in 2017 global apocalypse will begin.

Zombies are quite popular in recent years. Maybe too popular.

I haven't decided about Walking Dead completely. I watch the show regularly and first season was great, but after it. Ups and downs, ups and downs. :)

All Austrian Ducat coins that are minted to this date have the year '1915' on them.

Ahhhh, so it's just a random date they came up with? I thought it married up with Zombie lore somehow.
