https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tw5TC59ihho&feature=youtube_gdata_player 2 min clip on how to pay a council fine. Comments welcome and any updates on his success?
It's this sort of thing that has led to in NSW the State Debt Recovery Office dealing with all fines over automated phone or internet service. Very impersonal.
http://banknotes.rba.gov.au/legaltender.html It sucks, legal tender is legal tender, i can understand a small shopkeeper not having time to count $60 in coins, but a government department should be obliged to accept any legal tender also from the RBA website... If a provider of goods or services specifies other means of payment prior to the contract, then there is usually no obligation for legal tender to be accepted as payment.
Maybe if they have a part payment scheme he could drop $5 worth of 5c coins till it's paid. I wonder if there's any 1972 5c coins there?
I think it's 100x face value per denomination. So if he had done his research he could have paid his $60 fine with $5 in 5c, $10 in 10c, $20 in 20c, and $25 in 50c, have been within the confines of legal tender, and still made his point by paying in small change.
Nope: Must admit I thought of doing exactly the same thing when I got a parking fine once, but then I thought: - The cashier counting the money was not the person that issued the fine in the first place - I had much better things to do with my time
Had some problems in Newcastle last month. Car died in town 4.45pm to Budget car rental. Had $700 odd cash in wallet. Tried to hire a car. No you won't, must be buy credit card. Tried to give her the $700 till tomorrow when I return the car if she gave me a receipt. NO. This was note money and legal tender. She said its a company policy. I told her that Australian law trumps policy. She said No and I'm leaving in 6 mins. Thank god for American Express, called them explained the situation extended my limit by $1000. Did the paper work and drove off leaving $20 worth of their rubber on the road out front. Was going to complain to Budget but have learnt all that happens is a nice kettle saying they will look into it. Sure thing.
I gave friends a $200 cash gift a while back - in $1 coins just for a joke - being last minute I had to get them from the local pokies venue - the gaming staff thought it was a bit weird that I dropped $200 and straight away hit 'collect'...
