The premium that seems to be on Johnson Matthey 1 oz bars I've seen for sale ... s there a reason for this?

Are these JM bars more recognised than other bars @ re-sale?

Or is it just because they look nice?

    Just wondering. :/

Johnson Matthey was established in 1817*, so yes, these bars will definitely be more recognizable than a generic 1oz bar. Also, they come with serial numbers, which is a rarity among the 1oz'ers. These are my favorite 1oz bars for those reasons, however they are still just name brand generic bars. I wouldn't mind paying an extra dollar per ounce to get these if I was just going to get generic silver.

    Just my 2c

I don't see what you're talking about... All the local dealers have it around the same premium as other 1oz bars

The current JM 1oz bar that you can by from dealer (especially in Australia) is produce under license. JM only does 100oz bar and bigger for the bank or jewellery industry nowadays.

So if you see an older JM bar, it probably will have nice premium on it. But the current bar should be the same just like any 1oz bar...give and take a dollar or two.

Can anyone show pics of the current vs the older, to see the difference?

    Hi,

I bought "a couple" of JM 1oz bars yesterday.

They all have serial Numbers on them.!

I bought them from Atkinsons jewellers.
On the web site they are described as follows (copy and paste of their description)

    Description

Johnson Matthey 1oz Fine Silver Bar. These are brand new bars from one of the premier bullion manufacturers in the world. Each bar has its own serial number.

As the price was ok I tried to buy more, but they had none in stock.
A chance remark by the owners assistant I picked up on
"aren't they made over here, under licence"

Anyway I managed to buy some more (at yesterdays price) as they're getting another delivery during next week.

If they arrive with serial numbers should I be concerned???

How do I attach a picture (of a bar I bought) to a post?

    Your right DanielM.

I found some JM bars and bought before I joined Stacker forum and found links to the sponsors ... got mine for a little too much it seems.

Oh well, I suppose it's one of those lessons learned when starting a new venture.

Exactly, just write it off as experience. I think most people get burned on the way into the pm craze

I noticed some silver plate (NOT solid silver) JM bars on Ebay being sold by a seller in the UK , these have NO serial numbers.

Is that what you are talking about Stax?

No, I'm buying mine through a jewellers (Atkinsons - their adverts are all over the gold/silver sites)

The ones I bought Saturday all have serial numbers on them.

    I wouldn't buy off ebay
    Never.
