We've stumbled across these in our search for more interesting products to put up on The Bullion Foundry: They are 1 oz silver Englehard Prospector Rounds from 1982. What's the go with popularity? I know the 1 oz bars are very popular, but I don't see many rounds going around (pardon the pun!).
While it was in production (1982-87), it was one of the most popular silver rounds in the US and Canada and it's still fairly popular. The 1983's are rarer and more costly, but the other years are still pretty common in Canada and the US. Prospector rounds were also made in 1/10oz, 1/4oz and 1/2oz sizes and all of those are rare and costly these days. I don't know how common they are in Australia.
Here in the states, these generally go for $5-8 over spot, depending on if you know where to get them They are popular, anything with the engelhard name is going to have no problem getting sold, however imho they don't deserve the premium they go for.. I'd rather pay close to the same premium and get something with potential for numismatic value, such as something from the perth mint All silver is not created equal lol
Interesting views there concerning these rounds. Does anyone on this forum actually own these rounds (from Australia)?
I always wondered why these command such a premium - one bullion dealer here in Canada lists them for ~$40.00CAD even though they have no stock and no guaranteed delivery date.
yep .. i have a stack ive had since my first year stacking (2008) back when i was importing most my silver). These carried a $2 over spot premium or so back then! 1for1
Nice pictures SCS. I do have to admit I have some as well, and when it comes to privately minted 1oz rounds, the prospector with the large E on the reverse is my favorite
I think they're way too common to demand any large premium, and I do recall there being fakes around. Just another round in my opinion.
