Without the money of the likes of Palmer they'll never amount to much. Australians are to apathetic to make a difference.

I thought it was a bit rich that the LDP was A on the ballot paper and Liberal Nationals were Y

I don't remember there being a line on the green coloured senate paper, just a list of 8 candidates. (edit - my bad, that's the house of reps paper! - oh well, at least my vote went where I wanted it to go :p )

Still, I had a look at their (LDP) policies and they are mostly reasonable. Several conservative parties got a senator in too, with a little twist, such as AME.

    tallyroominexile.wordpress.com gives this, so far:

    Coalition 33 (31-35)
    Labor 25
    Greens 10 (10-12)
    Palmer United Party 2 (1-3)
    Xenophon 1
    Family First 1
    Australian Sports Party 1 (0-1)
    Australian Motoring Enthusiasts 1 (0-1)
    Democratic Labour Party 1
    Liberal Democratic Party 1

The change won't happen until July next year, so there will be plenty of time for more boats and waste.

I concur, they got a senate seat because 99% of the people who voted for them above the line in NSW, mistook them for the Libs/Nats.

They really do not deserve it and its a hollow victory getting there by deceit.

Just read a Fairfax article on the Senate outcome - they didn't even get a mention, I think the reporter counted them as a Coalition seat!

Have to agree Byron, it's a hollow victory for supporters - but now that they are in they should make the bloody most of it.

Fairfax is now branding the LDP "right wing" and "gun rights supporters".

As they said - luck of the draw - first above-the-line party and with Liberal in the name, the dumb mob have spoken with 8.8% of the primary in NSW! Personally I like the outcome though, could have been Smokers Rights or Stop CSG!

They had a 10 second "interview" with the lib dem senator elect on 7 news this evening.

It boiled down to "they support the legalisation of marijuana, gun ownership and the right to kill yourself".

That is basically how the msm will label them.

and these are all - in their own right - good libertarian policies.

no surprise then that they forgot to mention the fact that under an LDP government people would get to keep most of their hard earned money for themselves, unlike now where well over 50 cents in the dollar (i'm not sure of what the exact amount is) ends up being paid over to government by the average middle income family in one form or other of taxes/charges/fines or whatever the hell you wish to call it.
Best to keep that bit a secret as the people may just actually like that

Their plethora of other excellent policies also didn't get a mention lol

Personally I dont care how the LDP got a seat in the senate its far from a hollow victory the sports party got 225 primary votes and gets a seat. It is fantastic news -

I hope this can lead to greater freedom - lower taxes - smaller government its a great result for the nation

I already have that right, am currently ploughing my way through another bottle of red. Then, when I get the courage, I'll try to chuck the leg over the missus.

    Voluntary euthanasia.

    Couldn't be simpler. :p

Gun-loving Liberal Democrats pull off greatest election fluke www.news.com.au

"IT is a gun-loving fringe party with a similar name to the new government, but the Liberal Democrats made no apologies for pulling off one of the biggest electoral flukes in Australian history.

Having sneaked 8.5 per cent of the vote - the backing of a staggering 283,000 people - in New South Wales, the six-year-old Liberal Democrats are set to gain at least one Senate seat," Antony Green election analyst

I really hope it wasn't just a fluke.
On the WA Senate Ballot the two LDP candidates were in the second group after the Smokers Rights Party. It's quite possible some votes couldn't tell the difference and just put a 1 next to the first "liberal" they saw.

    Oh well more fool them.

I must admit that I initially felt the same, thinking that these party's may have a myopic single stream interest.

However, and whilst I have not read their policy platform, considered that they just may bring a lacking dose of common sense to the senate, unencumbered by larger picture deals. We shall see.
