Get a job in the resources sector mate. You'll double that wage straight away.

Exactly, better off being a tradie in the resources sector than being a doctor in a major population centre. At least that's the case under say, 30 years old. A tradie has no hex debt and makes money as soon as they start their aprenticeship. A doctor does a 6 year degree with a huge hex debt to pay off once they are through.

I was in Roma south central Queensland a few weeks ago. They were saying there that 7,000 jobs had gone in the last 18 months from local mines and then the flow-on effect would be more lost I guess.

Forget the capital cities for buying a house. Large regional cities like Cairns or between Newcastle and Gold Coast is where you'd rather be.

In Cairns for $600k you could buy a very palatial home on a good chunk of land either on the edge of the rainforest on by the beach. $600k in Melbourne or Sydney buys you what exactly ?!?!?

600k on the gold coast would get you a pretty pimping house in the hinterland. Or a family home on the canal waterfront. Id rather be in the hinterland

Do you mean they charge customers $120/hr or a normal wage earning plumber actually gets $120/hr in their pay packet? There's a big difference.

Yeah, $60 per hour goes into maintaining their 15 year old beat-up van.

I had one tradesman trying to charge $600 for three hours work (I timed him, 3 hours is generous). I estimated materials were $150-$200 (at retail).

Well done mate. As suggested take your lunch and limit the coffee you drink at work. Find out the streets with no meters/free parking even if they're a 15 minute walk away from work. All that cuts into what you earn.
