Hi all recently purchased a dump its grade is VF (purchased from nobles numismatics) I was wondering if I should send it to NGC or PCGS will this increase its value ect and if I get it graded how would I go about doing It? I am also from sydney if that helps thanks all -Max
Oh dear... Didn't look to see what subforum this was posted in and was totally expecting something else after reading that title!!!
007 NGC will grade higher than our grading standards here. The beauty of grading is that the coin will be preserved and also authenticated. I do prefer my rarities to be graded as such. You can join as a member and just send it off to Florida,it normally takes 21 working days to grade so the whole process takes about 7 weeks.
Having your coin independently graded may well make it easier to resell when the time comes, however not all collectors of colonial-era coins insist on their coins being independently graded - not yet anyway. That there has only been one dump and two Holey Dollars graded by PCGS to date probably confirms this - if you were going to use any independent grader to assess your coin, they'd be the people to use I believe, they're far more widely accepted in Australia than NGC are, for our coins anyway. Colonial-era coins are far more tactile than pre-decimal Commonwealth coins, and there are less concerns about preserving surface quality than for high grade proof copper coins etc. Both of these factors mean if you want to confirm the authenticity and grade of your coin without getting it slabbed, you might be better off going down another path.
It depends if you feel happy for a professional to grade your dump or do you want to take your dump to a few people and have them grade it? Then at least you can take an eduacted guess of the grade and subsequent value of your dump. Do you know the grade of the hole your dump came from as that may play a part in it's value? If you know, you might like to show them the hole as well.
Sorry, but this had me absolutely lmao! Reminds me of the recent advertising campaign for bowel cancer testing!
