I've got a young lad (now with a full Dansco set except for one hole!) asking me a 1923 Halfpenny - Anyone know where best place to source a decent one? I know they're going for $300-$silly on Feebay - and I'm au fait with spotting fakes - just wondered if anyone here can point me in the right direction - All help v much appreciated
i think you will might need more than $300 for a 1923 half penny may have to add another thousand to it
^^^^ I'm not into numismatics but I'd be surprised if that's not on the mark By a freak chance I have a 1923 halfpenny and I wouldn't sell it unless I were starving or something. Good commentary on the reasons for rarity in the below link. Valuation Typical Handled: $1500 This valuation represents a typical handled example of the coin. Coins in better condition will command a substantial premium over the listed price. For example, an average 1911 florin is worth around $50, but in choice uncirculated condition is worth about $15,000! http://www.bluesheet.com.au/Australia/Commonwealth_Coinage/Half_Penny/George_V/1923_(MS)
Found one in v nice condition, verified by a major Aussie dealer - a snip at $1250. This sort of detective work keeps my mind off bloody pm prices too lol. I've got an option on another 1923 1/2d, not as nice though, asking $995. I think I'll send the first one off to NCS for conservation & grading - the other one I'll bill my mate for & surprise his son on his birthday next month. Job's a good'un. Thx for all the info guys.
We've got one for auction here: http://www.numisbid.com.au/Browse/Coin/857--//10444/ It's had verdigris removed from the reverse so it'll probably go cheap (especially so considering it's a solid good VF)
Thanks for the info - I have a couple now. With this one re verdigris - was it conserved or cleaned - professionally?
There's no evidence of abrasive cleaning, but the reddish regions around the reverse legend show minute pitting indicating it once had verdigris. They're too small to have been manually picked, I suspect they were chemically removed.
My niece has that coin in her collection; never knew it was worth so much.... Her coin is has few noticeable nicks on the obverse, guess that dents the value in a big way
