I have a cigar briefcase with foam inside kind of similar to the foam in a pelican hard case. It's airtight but I was wondering if anyone knows whether the foam is caustic when in contact with silver bars. I know certain paper with high acid content is bad and once I had a bar in contact with a rubber band which very quickly left ugly black marks. Safe to store silver in these type of cases or not?
If it's just low premium bars that you're storing, I wouldn't worry much about tarnish, it doesn't change the value of the silver. If you have coins though, or if you would just prefer them nice and shiny, I would be careful around foams and plastics.
yep im no cheaparse .Its multi purpose when your finished you can drive it into werewolves/zombies eyes to disable them while you kick them in the plums
If you are worried about your bars tarnishing, just put them in ziplock bags first throw in a moisture baggy thing and you are good to go.
It's the third twist that'll confound them. Well done. On topic... I've been wondering about the Pelican cases and their imitations. They are meant to be water proof so i need to look into the off-gas and tarnish issue as well.
The airtight thing is good, I'm just wondering about contact with the foams. I just don't want it to turn the color that it does when silver touches a rubber band. That's freaking ugly and HARD to get off. And yes, I know tarnish doesn't diminish value, I just love my shiny!
That's what I've done so far. It's just for fun for a couple bricks. It's a bit childish but I feel like I'm going to a gun buy or something but it's less picturesque when the bars are in ziplocks =D I've always wanted a briefcase full of Krugerrands but since I don't have a couple million dollars laying around I'll have to settle for this.
The rest of my stack is in airtight containers and food vacuum sealed bags (except some of the extruded bars which have a habit of puncturing the bags). This is just for fun =D
it's only 9 1/3 kgs =D It's a small case, not a full size briefcase, there's just no perspective in the picture =D. When I carry it I can pretend I'm a giant. Holy crap! A giant..... secret gun deal..... it's like being a kid again playing make believe. Silver is so fun! lol
Yeah, wondering about the same... My coins are all in airtights or tubes, but bars are all over the place: zip locks, plastic bags, pouches, bubble wrap etc. So does anyone know for sure, which types of plastics don't tarnish silver? Freaking Mints sell some of the bullion in tarnishing plastic pouches, go figure! I don't even own food vacuum sealer, but the idea sounds good, might even buy it just for that.
Impressive case and contents. Make sure you wear a dark suit and sunnies when you transport. : ) Was thinking if larger amounts needed to be moved with silver being as heavy and awkward as it is then a sml /medium solid frame, wheeled airline carrying bag wouldn't draw too much attention as most use them for travel.
I remember in an episode of the show White Collar there was a guy carrying around a suitcase of Krugerrands, a couple million worth. Just strolling down the street. Apparently when you have that much money you can carry around a couple dozen kgs in one hand swinging it around no problem =D. But back to the point of the thread.... anyone know if that foam in the case is caustic?
Love to see them lift a full on eof those into the overhead locker. Give you a tip, put it in the locker above someone else just in case.
