Hi all, I have just started looking at the lunar coins and I need to learn a few things.
Can someone please tell e the difference between the S1 and S2 versions?
How can you tell the difference between s1 or s2?
Thanks again, sorry for the newbie questions.

S1 years are from 1999 thru 2010, while the three last years all minted in 2007.
S2 series started on 2008 and it is still ongoing.

The designs are different between S1 and S2.

I find that by looking at the designs I can tell the difference :D

The pictures of Series 2 are the proof versions. The bullion versions are the same design, just without the mirrored background.
For series 1 the proof versions have a different design, but also a mirrored background.

Series 2 coins also have a larger diameter.

Some of the Series 2 coins can still be had for a very good price, while series 1 is much rarer and typically demands much higher prices.

It is quite a challenge, and what makes collecting fun, to get a complete set of the series 1 proof coins.
After x years of collecting I still don't have all of them.

Oh, and series 2 started with the idea of having 2 animals per coin, while series 1 only has 1 animal.
I think the tiger was an exception as for some reason you are not supposed to show two tigers (that's what I vaguely remember).
I don't know why they forgot about this idea when the dragon came out. They probably threw all their principles over board when the dragon fever caught them and greed took over :)

Now that idea would have produced some very interesting designs indead.... and maybe twice as much dragon fever.
