I'd like to get some government issue/face value 1oz coins, but without the Queen on them. So that leaves American Silver Eagles, Libertads, and Philharmonics. Are there any others? Is there any reason to get ASE over Libertads or Philharmonics?
What a cool post, so many questions arise! How does having a picture of the Queen on the coin effect the silver? Is it a personal dislike of her Majesty, or do you think the people you will sell your silver onto will not buy it because of the picture on it? Can there be other queens on the coin, like Holland? What's the benefit of government issued silver over non government issued? We know that there is no additional security because we have seen pictures of fake Maples and fake Lunars. How does having a face value (often way below intrinsic value) make any difference? If you are not going to spend them then what other purpose does having a face value serve? If anything I would think it would be riskier as being legal tender the government might like to lay some claim to it. Anyway, the only reason I would buy one type over another would be price and availability. The denomination that the coin is in would not really worry me, if the US$ collapses then the ASE is still worth the same amount. I wouldn't pay any extra to have Panda's, for instance, imported into the country over anything available cheaper locally. I like the Libertads and for a while they were bit higher in price but then the supply increased so they came down a bit. It is a tough one though, the queen is everywhere OUT Canada - Maples Fiji - Taku UK - everything Oz - everything NZ - everything IN African countries South America Europe Asia
Yeah i also dont fancy having the queens mug on every coin/round i own. I think shes overrated Have a look at the OPM generic rounds at kjc, although some might consider them rather bland I think the are rather nice looking + they dont have sky high premiums on them. As i write this a tube of 20 is going for $606.77c That is $30.33 per ounce Buy in bigger quantities and save your hard earned. I believe opm (ohio precious metals) recycle silver and this is what the majority of their silver products consists of. Link below https://www.kjc-gold-silver-bullion.com.au/CT/silver-bars/12 ^sorry just reread your post and saw you were after government/face value coins Opm dont have a face value or government backing So my post is irrelevant
The same reason I'd avoid anything with Obama, Merkel or Barroso etc on it. It's nothing personal, and the rule extends to all monarchs/leaders. It's just one more factor that could turn a potential buyer off. If not today, then maybe tomorrow. Perceived lower chance of being counterfeit. Not so important to me as a buyer, but could be a selling point in the future.
I avoid any rounds with anything about drugs or guns on them, I have come across the Weed leaves and Second Amendment rounds, I have a few 'political slogan' rounds but they are for my collection, not for resale so I am not worried that they would be hard to sell on. Avoid Gov. issued Pandas then, are all fake I think if silver goes up there will be a lot more fakes and I think the well known ones will be the targets. Not really much you can do about that though. I think that having Australian Gov rounds in Australia would be easy to offload just because they are recognisable. I am slowly moving away from rounds but I have a tube or two of the ASEs and some rolls of lunars. I like the new cheaper XAG rounds from Goldstackers etc. Not gov issued though.
Phillharmonica's are the nicest of the bunch but they will develop milk spots which will ruin the aesthetics of them. I'd go with the eagles.. They contain another metal in them which makes them tougher and they certainly won't milk up on you. The libertards are an attractive coin too.
I get tired of the queen too. Ever notice... recently, that the queen has gills on her neck? skin flaps? Somalian Elephants = no queen
When (if!) she dies - I wonder what the total mintage of QEII head coins would be... And the total number of ounces too!
Looks like Fiji is removing the queen. http://www.numismaster.com/ta/numis/Article.jsp?ad=article&ArticleId=26096
