    'LO Bullionfrog,

I use ChoiceTrade in the US as a broker (about US$5 a trade). They're pretty helpful.

You can also use Etrade Australia but their rates are not that cheap.

    Thanks a lot Gassit!

If ChoiceTrade is in US, how you do the transaction for SMSF? Special those account need to be funded before you can trade.

    Bullionfrog,

Basically all the instructions are on their website.

But you can't open the account as a pension fund. So just call the account something like "your name" SMSF No.1. That way the ATO recognizes it as an SMSF account while the designation means nothing to ChoiceTrade; it's just some initials after your name.

    Cheers.

As an aside, there's an inherent conflict between the ATO being both the overseers of SMSF's and a tax collector. The ATO is out to get as much tax as it can, that's its main function but it also regulates SMSF's. Clearly regulations, rules etc should be separate from an organisation who is out to generate as much income as possible in taxes. Otherwise its logical that rules and regulations will continually be amended with a bias to fulfill the ATO's primary goal, revenue !
