What is a privy mark? And how can I tell the difference between an origional and reminted 1oz Kookaburra??
A privy mark is an additional mark or small design like a lion, dragon or snake that has been added to normally a popular coin that has maxed out its mintage. What this does is creates a loophole for the mint to add another 50k-200k coins to their line-up and also gives the mint an opportunity to shove a large pineapple up their once proud and local customer base who paid a small fortune for non privey. Reminted kooks have been frowned upon by some of the early stackers of these coins because they have paid huge premiums for certain coins to complete their sets. There is no way to tell a remint and an original apart exept that the originals may show signs of toning and also the 1990-1999 coins came in square capsules. Hope this helps
Thanks SikverSerfer, I knew what privy marks were, but information about reminting was new to me. I did not even know they were doing that. Are they doing it for all years of Kookaburras or just few select ones? Thanks again!
