Hello, I am relatively new to the silver stacking world/rare coins... I am looking for someone with significant knowledge of numismatics as well as bullion to ask questions as I go along. Please let me know if you'd be available to answer questions and I appreciate your help in advance! -JS
USSSAlabama, I'm in the same boat as you. I'm from South Florida. Maybe we can learn together as we go along. I'm just a bit south of you.
Sounds good! Yeah not too far at all. I am really interested in all of this and since you're in the United States that helps even more with coins from our history.. Do you have a FB or anything we could keep in better touch with?
Just ask questions in the forums. I am not sure you'd find someone willing to take on such responsibility, the community is full to the brim already with 'experts' and anyone claiming such a title will just cop shit from the rest. No harm in asking questions as they arise to the general crowd. Bring popcorn if the question relates to a debatable, divisionary or contentious issue though.
Well the reason I am looking and asking in this manner is because I'm in the United States... Most of the Aussie in here don't know (and I don't expect you guys to know) much about Morgan, Peace, Walking Liberty, Mercury Dimes and other historic American coins. Thanks!
Well I guess my biggest question at this point is, What does it take to get to a point where you can make money doing this on the side? NOT from the stance of bullion but more so on Numi's... Would you say the best approach is, after doing extensive homework obviously, to go to coin shows and search ebay and things like that for people letting some of these coins go for lower than what you think their value might be? I know in a down economy the Numi market takes a much bigger hit, contrary to that of what Bullion would do.. But I am trying to figure out how these coin and pawn stores work... You can't make a living and pay the rent by making 5 bucks per coin on premium for bullion...
+1 My friend's grandfather is from Honduras of all places and he's been stacking for decades. Aside from his PM's that he's been stacking for decades, he has a huge coin collection and has an incredible collection of American coins that he knows a whole bunch about. I primarily only collect American coins but there are tons of people out there who collect everything. The way I see it is if it's beautiful to look at, someone is going to want it. I never thought I'd want a Mexican coin, but I just fell in love with the Mexican Libertad. I bought one of the old design and one of the new. It's a gorgeous coin.
I would say buying and selling pre-64 coinage for profit would be too much of a hassle. Just stack it for the medium to long term, try to get as much silver as you can for your dollar. My 2 cents.
Thanks... And yeah the Libertad is a really nice coin. I also LOVE the Brittania and the Philharmonic. I try to stay away from the Perth stuff because of the heavy premiums attached to them.. Some of the canadian stuff I like as well.. Dustin, I don't mind the hassle.. Enough people partake in this business so they HAVE to be making money on it. I'm curious as into how the operations work in a business like this
I am all for on the job training... However, for the money I'd get paid in a coin store it's a no go... Perhaps I can learn in my own time and do this on the side and keep my current job that pays 5 times what a coin store would pay me ?
