The man behind this company http://www.taisei.com.sg/

I do not know much about him but has definitely came across his name is various large public auction, not limited to MCC though.

Perhaps our Singaporean friend can tell you more.

    Totally off topic but...

I'm surprised there's NT$ on the bidding board.

I guess on the surface China is all like "screw you Taiwan" but deep down nobody gives a crap when $$$ is involved :p

    On topic...

Lovely awesome pattern Panda. Imagine if that was a 70 grade... wonder what it'd fetch.

For those who have no idea why this is expensive, "pattern" coins are defined as the pre production coins (ie. strike test). So they're super rare and have a mintage of like 5 or 10 usually.

Thanks Fishball, your little post answered a few questions I had , first why this is so limited and expensive, two what a pattern coin is and Three , I was just thinking not long ago if any trial strike (pattern coins I learned now) panda coins have ever been spotted. I know these type of coins have come from the US mint and usually very controversial as they are supposed to be destroyed and Government usually can claim these as they were illegally smuggled out. I would guess in China it is the same that they are supposed to be destroyed and must have been smuggled out and I would think it would be an executionable offence in China.

Does anyone know of any other of these trial or pattern pandas exist? I would love to hear more on these.

and like JC888.. was asking , how the heck do you get one????

This article answer some of your questions, including how and where it came from, and how you get one.

    http://www.hosane.com/newsdetail.asp?newsID=520&LANG=cht

For the 1983 Silver pattern panda, it was actually for sale in 1983. Just who has the foresight and the money to buy then?

    Mr. Lim bought one.

In Hosane article, it was said that Hosane persuaded Mr. Lim to consign this pattern so the world has a chance to see the coin.

I strongly suggest you read the article. You will have great respect for the man behind this pattern and the historical importance of the pattern.

Sorry to say, tieing the value of this pattern with the numerical grading is a true insult to this historically significant pattern. Whether it is PF60 or PF68, it is important part of the history of China Mint and no money can buy the history.

I guess on the surface China is all like "screw you Taiwan" but deep down nobody gives a crap when $$$ is involved

    Not true. Blame the politicians.

Numismatically, some of the rarest old China coins are in the hand of rich Taiwanese collectors.

Low ,I could not agree with you more ,it is not only a piece of Chinese history ,but a true piece of history for coin collectors all over the world, I kinda meant my comment as a little jab at the current trend of " it has to be a 69 or 70 to be any good" Im sure the NGC graders spent more than a few seconds assigning a grade to that piece of history, but i still kinda scoff at the fact that they can look at a coin for less than 5 seconds and decide its fate:) I can clogg the bandwith on this site posting examples side by side of 68,s and 70,s where the 70 does not look as good ,It is especially prevalent in common coins like 2012 bears, 2012 dragons etc .I dont agree with the whole system per se, but the coin collecting world has put a premium on graded coins

As recently as 5 years ago, patterns were still floating around the market from time to time. Who knows, some naive seller may put one up for sale on eBay some day.

There are various types of patterns. Some very common, some common, some scarce, some rare, some very rare, some extremely rare that you probably never heard of.

I supposed the devil is in the details.

Sure you can get the common pattern today at very cheap price. You will never see the very extremely rare pattern, such as this 1983 silver pattern on ebay. NEVER!

If NGC graded art, they would probably grade the Mona Lisa a PF67. No respect for a piece of art whatsoever. What a bunch of hosers.
