Ways to save money to allow you to BUY MORE METALS

If you're into canned, frozen, dried foods etc., check out local factories if they have a seconds outlet direct to public shop. The savings can be massive and can be shared amongst family & friends when you buy in bulk.
Places like SPC/Ardmona, Sara Lee etc. Others such as graysonline or wood & metal recyclers are good for building/renovating materials. The list is endless. Always check online for prices first, most things are cheaper to buy overseas even with shipping costs included.

 

Reuse your wifes and your kids toilet paper :lol:

 

Go to the shops with a shopping list and only buy what is on the list
Buy your staples in bulk at your local bulk foods place (rice, canned goods, etc)
Ride a bike instead of driving
One car per family if possible (more for the depreciation/insurance/rego costs)
Leftovers for lunch (healthier option most of the time too!)

IMO the savings are made in your regular purchases, not your outliers. I always shop around for my "one off" purchases, but if I want something nice I'll buy it (since the rest of my life is basically a sacrifice). Not buying the few things you want is not the way to a happy life. The way to save money is by doing things like cutting your food bill by $10 a week ($520 at the end of the year) Taking your lunches to work and saving $5-10 a day ($1825-3650 a year!), etc. By doing this, I still remain a somewhat "normal person" who buys some new clothes/laptop/whatever every so often. Nowhere near as much as my friends, but often enough for me not to come across as a tin-foil hat wearing hippie weirdo. :lol:

Yes! We always buy the "cooking bananas". $1.99kg, sometimes cheaper, while the unripe green ones are crazy prices.

 

Put in a banana plant. Productive things they are.

Go to the toilet at work - you get paid to do it and you use their resources!

this means i can buy 1oz of silver more a week

If you are struggling to make ends meet, I'd suggest investing the time in looking for a better paid job!

 

for the past 18 months I haven't paid rent/mortgage.

I subscribed to all the house sitting website and get a 3-6 month gig after another. usually there's a 2-3 weeks gap in between (sometimes not) and I just go on a little vacation.
I religiously buy pm weekly with the money saved + whatever profit from my projects.

compounding is the key.

Yeah this is a good one, I was thinking of doing this once. Of course I would specialize and go for that house-sitter service where you simultaneously look after the house owner's pets. Then I would take my dog too.

One area in particular I have cut down alot is my mobile phone.

Had been on a 2 year plan and was paying about $80 - 90 a month.
Once I had finished the plan in August I decided to buy just a $30 pre-paid card for my phone.

Can't believe it. Paid for a $30 card 3 months ago and my balance left is
$20.80 as of yesterday. Considering I have made a couple of calls from Melbourne to Perth
and a few local calls using my mobile as well as alot of calls to my wife and kids less than 5 minutes its (free)
Over the longterm this amounts to a substantial saving. My wife topped it up this morning with $10 which will carry
over my balance for the next 3 months.

Something else to consider. An SS member did previously highlight it as a way of saving.

Everytime you get a $5 note, put it away and forget about it.

Don't tell your spouse. :lol:
OK! Thats exactly what I have been doing.

The pile has grown rather quickly.

I then thought, why not $10 notes as well.

So I have been doing the same thing.

A bit more difficult is the $20 note.
If I think I have one to spare it goes into a new little gladbag as well.
I have set targets of having 100 of each. $3,500 or 3kgs of Silver.

Two of the reasons why I like this approach.
It is easy to do with a bit of discipline.

May even set my target higher at a later stage once I have reached the initial target.

Why do I see this as important?

If things really got ugly in this country, one of the first
things to be stopped would be ATM & C/C.
Initially, "Cash is King" especially at a grocery, department store
or Petrol Station. Not saying that its going to happen.
However, I am not going to take the risk of not having some standby
cash in case of an emergency.

Anyway, thats a couple of my strategies.

I guess this thread comes down to how many luxuries are you willing to sacrifice?

I like having a cool new phone every so often, I use it all the time.
I like having a comfy/reliable car, not something that is literally just A -> B.
I like going out for a decent meal with friends quite often.

Prioritize your own life with the luxuries that you enjoy (and keep you sane) and wouldn't want to get rid of.
Then remove the rest

Life is to be enjoyed.

 

I agree with the monkey, Life is to be enjoyed, If I want a cigar, I will have one, if I want my single malt so be it, but then on others I am happy to go without, such as has been suggested, if its cold I put on more clothes, not the heater, I use AC only when it gets to hot to sleep comfortably and even then only enough to get it down to a bearable temperature

 

Buy a "how to make more money" book.

 

use op shops, clothes are quite often new last season fashion donated by shops and i have found a number of silver items for a fraction of spot noodling though their stuff
look for best price on fuel, we have fuel watch in wa
drink less, good for your wallet and health
when you get your insurance renewal, ring them up, say that you have been speaking to anouther insurerer who with beat there price by 10% if you move accross and theat they went through the policy with you to ensure they offered the same bennifits. they WILL drop the price if your worth insuring. (note i wouldnt try this if you make heaps of claims)
excersise more, you will be suprised how much money you spend when you are bored, exersise really fills your time
get a hobby, mine is coin collecting, again idle hands do the devils work and spend money
value purchases based on time eg that jet ski will cost $x which takes Y hours to earn but i will only use it for Z hours. if Z<Y then dont buy it. simple

 

Convert your frequent flyer points to coles/woolworths gift cards, use them for shopping and use the money for bullion. I just traded in some points for $1900 in gift cards. Looking forward to spending it!!!!

I bought an espresso machine I usually make pressed black coffee as thats what I prefer but the mrs enjoys her lates and chai latea had she makes one pretty much everyday its easily paid for itself in 3 months its a Breville. Im workin on cutting out ciggies and even though I dont smoke much its still an oz of gold down the drain every year. If you surf buy firewire boards in FST tech. I used to break destroy 3 boards a year at 5-600 a pop my firewire just broke after over 2 1/2 yeara of regular use even though theyre slighty more to buy they last much longer and surf amazing an no I dont work for breville or firewire. Also dont be a suvker and just use regular 87/90 octane gas apparently premium is.t even always premium and youll save about 10 bucks every fill.

 

mate... electricity bill for this freezer is going to kill you, and it's on-going fix cost. How many years will it take to offset your initial cost and running cost?
