So, like lots of other people, I have a money tin where I throw all my loose change at the end of the day / week.

Since being on this site, I have realised that there is the potential for there to be a rare / unique coin in there somewhere (fingers crossed)

What I dont know, is what should I be looking for? The obvious things like obvious mis-strikes etc, but what about specific coins from specific years?

For example, is a 1966 20c piece worth anything above its face value?

    Cheers all

    1966 wavy '2' base line
2000 $1 mule double rim on the back
    2000 50c incused flag
    1985 50c (1m mintage)
    any cuds or die cracks
    1972 5c
2001 50c and 20c centenary of fed state coins
    any older unc coins

that's all I can think of from the top of my head, if you're interested in coins but Greg McDonald's book or renniks

    Thanks for that.

That is the sort of info I am after.

Might just have to have a look for those books, too.

    Hi

one of the easiest ways to see whats rare in total mintage is on the Royal Australian Mint site http://www.ramint.gov.au/designs/

and using an Australian coin catalog to see what the market wants. they dont always go for the rarest years. so its good to have a spread.
errors coins will always be worth something and may be worth more than a UNC normal coin in most instances

    1968 1c
    1990 1c
    2006 1c

    1968 2c second rarest 2c
    1969 2c rarest year

    1972 5c
    1972 10c

    1971 20c
    1985 20c
    1988 20c - super dooper rare..
and 1983 even though they minted a lot they melted a lot down too.

    1966 50c
    1979 and 1980 double bar
    1993 50c

    i dont really collect $1 and $2
but a 1992 Mob of roos is worth $1000 any day of the week, I will give you $1000, if you find one.

do they really sell for xxx? yes. all the time

the last 2 months has seen a slabbed 1968 1c go for over $250. or 25,000 times Face value. It would be the same as selling a $30 ASE silver round for $750,000 a few decades later.

a 1968 2c roll went for $4100. i have not been selling but started again this week and have been staggered at some of the prices realised. Considering the doom and gloom etc. I was not expecting it.

Its pretty hard to actually get a decent coin in a rare year. But there are other things to look for too. like errors. I lay them out with the queen up to date them. then look for misstrikes and cuds or planchet errors. then flip them to see if they are rotated then go over the reverse for errors. Is it worth it? you bet.
