No - but gold and silver (particularly silver) show up as black, and usually result in an inspection. Just ask for a private screening. Regularly fly with metals, never been an "oh you can't take that on board" reaction even to silver kilo bars.
Thank you very much. I wonder why smugglers dont just use gold and silver to move their money around. I was watching a border security show and a guy didnt declare $10k and it got held by the airport. If i wanted to move $100k off the radar i will get 2kg gold and silver plate it hehehe
Now there's some creative thinking! Wonder if it has ever been done before. Quite possible too- http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/chem03/chem03209.htm
might have some esplainin to do when you go to cash them in though, dealers have to report activity over 5k dont they? or is that only for purchases over 5k? unless you had a private buyer with 100k in cash, since otherwise the transaction would show up on your bank statements and banks have to report money going into an account over 10k dont they?
In adelaide at the dealers i use every transaction must be in cash. im not sure if things have to go on record but i bet if you sold it for 10% under spot and asked to not go on record they would do it.....everyone is at least a little corrupt. Another thought would be to make a 24ct dildo!!! what officer is going to check a MAN with a 16in heavy dildo in his carry on bag lol. Personal items like that could spark a law suit if handled incorrectly so its win win...."arr officer i have a gold fetish"
Do you ask for a "private screening" before going through security, or after they've pulled you aside and requested to look in your bag? I've been offered a "private room", but after I've tried to get through security, is that what you mean?
Why not just take a real kilo gold nugget and properly declare that you are carrying $3000 in currency ? That is the amount shown on the coin after all.
Ask before you go through the screening, I had this conversation with one of the security guys at the Perth airport 2 nights ago.
The denser the object, the blacker the image would be. Most of the metal that goes thru the detectors are base metals or if laptops are carried, than some other elements as well, but most of it is pretty much less than maybe 10 grams/cm3. Silver is about 11 , gold around 19, platinum around 21 - so the person working at the xray scanner would be able to pick up at slightly elevated 'blackness' differences in the image and it would probably trigger inspections.
I think there is a law that actually mentions taking gold out of the country s the face value would probably be irrelevant
Did you hear about the Arab parent who lost his kid at the an airport just before the flight was due to take off. She went screaming around the airport saying "Jihad!!!!, Jihad!!! where are you?" remember before someone tackles me for being rude - it was a joke.
