Hey guys, I am looking to buy/sell pre decimal silver, shillings and florins. No premiums just any old grade that I can clean and stack. What is the going rate for these? Is it fair to buy and sell at spot + postage? Do Pre 46 coins go for more then Post 46 coins or is spot fair for all years?
As a pre dec collector any cast offs I stack in bags of 10 oz asw, i.e $11 face for Post = 55 X 2/-; 110 X 1/- etc or a mix of all denoms. To me its still 10oz (ish) no matter what form it comes in and I will be interested in what value others put on it.
is spot fair for all years? No, not at all - Many pre decimal dates carry massive premiums, so offering someone spot price would be extremely inappropriate. 1for1
I usually try to buy pre dec at spot (incl postage), they are after all the "junk silver"...with the exception of 1966 50cent coin.
There is no junk silver. Pre dec has the cool factor. Only worth spot imo if bought in bulk from dealers who have picked the eyes out.
+1 Also, I currently buy pre threepence's for $1.5, sixpence's for $3, shillings for $6, and florins for $12, postage included (at current spot), if its post then just half all the costs, i'm not sure what the % is or anything premium wise, but i know I pay a premium for pre-decimal
Please note, this is not for bulk or highly worn/damaged coins, and am not always buying. I am not saying I am openly buying large amounts of pre-decimal or wanting to crash this thread saying I am buying predecimal over spot (which I'm not) lol. I am just saying what my maximum for these coin is (again at current spot)
On the pre dec coins...is it better for buyer to buy per coin or by the actual weight? I notice that the better grade usually sold by the coins?
Well it totally depends on what you want, how much you are willing to pay, etc. I personally avoid lots because they just shoot up in price and most of the time the seller will only send either express or registered raising prices again, whereas single coins and combined singles are generally sent by letters which dramatically lower the costs and also the individuals stay low for a long time up until the last hour or so, where I can jump in at the last few seconds and get it cheap as chips. Again just my opinion, just what I have noticed
If you can buy at spot, just be prepared to sell at spot. In many ways they are better to stack than say the very low premium bars like the 1kg because they are fractional. ie. if you need say just $100 you sell X number of coins. You cant sell 1/10th of a 1kg bar, you have to put the whole thing into cash, ie $1,000.
