To all Panda experts and panda masters yennus, comeaux and others. I want to know why do we just have 1oz SILVER PANDA PROOFS till 1996 ?? were PROOF coins from 1998 not available to general public ??
I was reading about 1995 silver panda yesterday. It was an article from an old book published by Shanghai Numismatic Society. Interesting year 1995 for silver panda.
My educated guess would be that precious metal demand was weak and thus proof pandas which was really the numismatic side of Panda coins got dropped because no one was buying. Some coins released by China Mint was also minted overseas eg platinum pandas - Royal Australia Mint and colored pandas - ? Switzerland. The 1997 platinum 1/20 oz for instance is one of the rarest pandas and this was probably a product of of very little demand. Management must have decided to stop mintage and concentrated their efforts on bullion coins.
I'm wrong.. Bimetallic Panda started in 1990. http://www.coinex.com/panda_coins/bimetallic/index.php But I'm sure they replaced the 1 oz Silver Proof Panda with the bimetal Panda at some stage. Too lazy to dig.
The 5oz Pandas are proof But yeah, I'm not sure why they stopped the 1oz ones... perhaps they preferred commemorative bears more
1997-1999 had proof pandas ... colored ones .. maybe the poor take up prompted the end of the series ... 96 being the lowest ..
Why im not sure, but 89-96, 8 Silver 1 oz Proof Pandas to me is much easier to collect/complete. And the low mintages would make them more worthwhile, imo.
