What is everyone's thought on the surprised announcement of the 1/2oz lunar snake?
Do you like it or hate? :)
I am sure there will be plenty on both sides of the party.

Apparently it is only available directly through Perth Mint who is getting quite cheeky these days.

Well, I don't mind either way, 1/2 ounce is too small for my collections anyway but if it is only available through Perth Mint then maybe the Australian sellers finally have something that isn't available overseas (until it is).

In which case I would be buying them up and selling them on eBay.

I think it might miff a few people that something originally only available in the 3 coin set is now readily available, it means they can't flip the 3 coin set for so much as it is only the 2oz proof which is unique to the set. If they release a 2oz proof later in the year the 3 coin set will plummet.

I would have been happy to get the 1/2 oz proof dragon seperately as I didn't get the 3 coin set and so 'missed out'

Good for people who want a 1/2 oz proof at a 'reasonable' price, bad news for the 3 coin set holders who are looking to flip and make $$$.

It is not really new - last year they did release a half oz proof boxed dragon, but they only in Europe - only way to get it in Aus was on ebay.

But this is the first time it is available in Aus directly from the Perth Mint on launch day.

Dammit, another one I missed. My dragon collection is looking pretty holey. Maybe I did get it, I will have to dig up the back garden to check.

It would be nice to think the Perth Mint are doing something for their Australian customers, shame I am over the lunars.

Skip it. With such a highmintage of 8000, you can probably get it below issue price here in the next couple of months on the buy/sell section.

The Perth Mint isn't doing its Australian customers any favours by releasing the 1/2 oz proof exclusively through them. What they are doing is securing roughly an extra $75,000 profit by cutting out the dealer discounts, which I think sit somewhere between 20% to 15%.

The fat cat gets a little fatter.

You'll never complete a set of 1/2 oz proofs
And that is the same reason I gave up on the SI 1/2oz UNC
    Instant dud for me

Am not suprised by this, just goes to prove you can't trust ANYTHING the PM says.

I dont really trust the PM either at this point, but this could just be a case where they ordered a bunch on the PM site like anyone else as I dont think there was an order limit on these, It would be comepletly dishonest however IMO if they did wholesale these to distributers after saying they were exclusive to the PM . Given the markup 75eur. I would think they just bought them on the site at the same price everyone else pays, but who knows.

OK here's my succinct view. Junk. Avoid them. You wont even get your money back in a few years time, let alone think about making a profit sizable enough to be considered a sound investment. Clear enough ?

That's kind of how much of the Perth Mint numi stuff is going. When the release price is 4x spot, how much profit opportunity can exist in the future? It'd have to be really special and really hot to have any shot. I just don't see it with those kinds of release prices.

Total quantity of 1/2 oz proof on the website has steadily gone down to 250 but now it is back up to 400.

Pretty soon it will be back to 1000?
