Its art, so it doesn't have to look reasonably life-like. If Picasso was still alive and he was an anonymous designer for the 2013 coins, presumably loads of people would just utterly trash the design. But once they found out that it was the work of a famous artist, they would all of a sudden talk about how they really love it... A bit of artistic style variation between the years is the spice of life.
Hi, yes that is true - but that is true across the board, ie: it is not a phenomenon specific to PM product.. eg: Cougars photo poorly yet arent half bad in hand. Anyway i agree with your point, and think the PM used to pioneer the Quasi numismatic bullion market, overall there bullion designs are/were top of the line, its just other mints are now offering better designs at similar or less prices rivaling PM with low mintages ie: Somalia, Armenia, Fiji psuedo-NZ mint, other mints are yet to pull any stunts and have a good impecable track record so im diversifing. Oh yeah.. i Love the 2013 Kookaburra.. nice and simple and shows the whole bird (PERCHING on a tree next to a pond (with Lily pads LOTUS), i dont like an overly cramed canvas with content, last years dissapointed me mostly from a core design aspect. 1for1
Off topic but Picasso was the designer / inspiration for a couple of Israel coins for the Rubinstein piano competition in the 70s. I have got a set of the silver and bronze coins. courtesy of Isreal Mint He was also the subject of a recent French rectangular coin. courtesy of Panda America
2012 and 2013 kooks look too Disney cartoony for my tastes. Prefer the earlier versions which were primarily realistic depictions.
Of all the designs of the Kooks, that would have to rank number 1 as the worst I have seen so far. It looks more like a toy with no resemblance of real Kookaburras. Very little detail. More like a cartoon character than one in real life. Don't mind the Snake. Simple, but effective. IMO the best design is the Kangaroo by far. Even the Koala looks more like "Blinky Bill". The best part of the Perth Mint Video was the music. Cheers markcoinoz
