Reading this forum, people are constantly talking about 1oz and other weight kookaburras, but very rarely about silver koalas.

Can some one please tell me the difference, apart from the animal adorning the coins?
    Are kooks rarer?
    Thanks

Kooks had a really nice following and were starting to generate decent premiums, then the PM shat on them.

    1. Reminting all Kooks not already fully minted, then issuing a privy 2012 with Dragon after the normal one sold out in record time (at around $850 a roll i might add) .. PM has done a great job of stripping any premium out of the kook market so perfect for a new entrant to walk in and snap em up for a few bucks over spot.. great for NEWBS.. a kick in the teeth for those who paid WAYYYY more.. anyone who got shafted has proberbly learnt not to pay premiums on PM stuff...

Now Koalas are getting more respect... until... the PM schitts on them?

Koalas are famous on this forum for having dodgy poor artwork. the 2011 and 2012 are particularly poor.

The 07,08 and 09 however are very nice and very low mintage .. in other words.. a great buy if you can pick up as a function of spot.

Lunar prices have also had the stuffing kicked out of them... most have shed at least $10... related to spot dropping but also the oversupply from perth mint and ridiculious amounts of 2012 dragons which stopped being funny about 10 variations in.

Id say dont buy ANY perth mint stuff unless you get it cheap, heaps of other great world coins cheaper! No saying what sort of decisions they make to further schitt on there fan base, more of the same crap id say.

The answer is that Kooks are limited in mintage, koalas are not.

With kooks mintage going to 1,000,000 in 2013, I wouldn't mind betting that the koala next year will have a lower mintage the the kook.

Not sure I understand the above.

Yes, Kooks are limited in mintage but then so are Koalas. They just get there differently. As has been discussed on other threads Kooks that have not been minted to their announced max regardless of year are being reminted causing quite a stir. Koalas, on the other hand are minted to demand and as noted above have mintage #s for the first 4 years of issue as follows (please correct me if my numbers are off):

    2007: 137,768
    2008: 84,057
    2009: 336,757
    2010: 233,531

    And I believe 2011 is around 910,480.

Not only that, but the 1/2 oz versions have even lower mintages. I believe the 2011 1/2 oz koala mintage was 76,755, and the previous years are under 20k... and they DO demand a premium. Also, mintage figures aren't the only thing dictating a coin's value, it's whatever ppl are willing to pay. I personally find the koals a much more appealing coin than the kooks. In fact, aside from the 2008 kook which is just stunning beautiful imo, the kooks just don't interest me at all. And I don't really like the older years of koals either, but the 2011 and 2012 koalas look great to me! I find the new style of design far superior... everyone's different, I snagged two mint, BU 2011 1/2 oz koalas a cpl days ago for $22.50 each and I think that was an excellent price as most are selling these for $30 or more...

I say stack what you like... period. Trends change, and collectors are fickle. There are no assurances to what the most valuable coins will be in the future so might as well buy what you enjoy and hope for the best. That's my view.

The artistry in the Kooks is at a much higher level than with the Koalas. (imho)

Well actually koalas are 'mint to order', not unlimited mintage.

"Explanation of "mint to order" = No mintage limit applies to these coins for 12 months.
However, production will close at the end of (each year) and The Perth Mint will declare each coin's official mintage."
    ref: http://www.perthmint.com.au//docume...Bullion_Coin_Series_2007_-_2011_Current_1.pdf

So any number of coins can be minted in the year of mintage, but once that year is over, the mintage is declared and no further minting will be done.
Obviously this is not the case with the kooks as the Perth Mint has shown - they will go back into the past and remint up to the declared maximum.
So koalas are rarer than kooks (at least between 2007 and 2010) and the Perth Mint has promised not to mint any more.

Everyone has crapped on the koala design for years but I think the 2007 to 2009 koalas are one of the best designs the Perth Mint has come up with recently.
The shimmer background finish is superb. I much prefer the older ones to the recent frosted ones.
I have been happily accumulating the 'unwanted' koalas for a number of years now - especially the carded versions.
It's getting harder now though - the prices keep going up.

You guys are forgetting that the Koala's also were minted in Specimen finish. The mintage on the Specimen Koala's is extremely limited.

    2007 Koala 3,060
    2008 Koala 4,601
    2009 Koala 6,292
    2010 Koala 2,752
    2011 Koala 11,865

These specimen koala's are going to be worth a pretty penny in years to come in my opinion not to mention the 07-09 are absolutely gorgeous coins.
