While we are devouring the Perth Mint May 2012 releases, something from the June 2012 releases caught my attention. Australian Map Shaped Coin Series Kookaburra 2012 1oz Silver Coin To be released 5 June 2012 For illustration purposes, I am attaching the coin from the Shanghai World Expo: Source:coins-auctioned.com So the Kookaburra 2012 1oz Silver will be different from the one illustrated above. Probably non-coloured, with the 2012 Kookaburra design. What do you guys think about this release? PS: I'll mock up one when I can get access to my computer
Other than it looking a bit odd for a fairly detailed shiney metal kookaburra to be sitting on a pretty plain painted fence it is not as odd as I thought it would be! While I am still not a fan of coloured coins I quite like the effort put into making the shape. Now if we can just get every other country in the world to do the same, to scale, I can get my shiney world map. You know what would be better in fact? Ditch the bird altogether and just print a map of Australia on it. Or better, engrave a map of Australia on it and ditch all the printing. And 1oz is too small so make it in 10oz so there is more detail. Actually come to think of it, that is a completely different coin altogether so I guess I am not that taken with the Kookaburra after all. Why isn't there a dragon on it? Thanks for the pics though, that one completely passed me by in all the dragon mania.
Perth most likely, it is a Mint Mark telling you where it was made. there are a few around; M for Melbourne, C for Canberra, B for Brisbane P is for Perth There is no need to label the proofs as such because they are so much better than the Specimens or Brilliant Uncirculated that you can tell just by looking at them. Or you could before they started covering them in paint. Maybe it means the paint is artist grade and not student grade. From about 2008 onwards... 1. The Privy Mark. This is an incuse letter within a square surround struck in relief. The letter represents a location but does not imply the coin was struck at that location. For example, S for Sydney. 2. The Mintmark. This is an unaccompanied letter struck onto the coin. The letter is on the die when the coin is struck and denotes the location that the coin is struck. The mintmark is a raised letter with no surround ie. C mintmark struck at the Gallery Presses or production presses at the RAM in Canberra, ACT. 3. The Counterstamp. The counterstamp is a raised letter within an incuse circular surround. Coins are brought to the location pre-struck with the design and the mobile coin press strikes the circle with the accompanying letter onto the coin ie. C for Canberra. from http://www.australian-threepence.co...-mintmarks-privy-marks-and-counterstamps.html
Just been doing a bit of research, there are going to be 2 Australia Map coins this year. The Kookaburra and an Emu. 2012 AUSTRALIAN MAP COINS (Items 96 - 97) Kookaburra The design for this (1oz) silver bullion coin depicts a representation of a kookaburra superimposed over a colour finish of a farming landscape featuring fields, tree and fences. The coin includes the inscriptions 'KOOKABURRA' '1oz 999 SILVER', '2012' and the initials of the designer Ing Jong 'IJ'. Emu The design for this (1oz) silver bullion coin depicts a representation of an emu superimposed over a colour finish of outback landscape featuring grass trees. The coin includes the inscriptions 'EMU' '1oz 999 SILVER', '2012' and the initials of the designer Ing Jong 'IJ'. - from Perth Mint Currency Determination 2011
why there is no one mentioned this New Australian Map Shaped Coin Series? The first one is just out, it is Kookaburra http://www.perthmint.com.au/catalog...n-series-kookaburra-2012-1oz-silver-coin.aspx 707 still availble edit: only 411 left. Edit again, only 372 left, Talismancoin already wants to sell it for $130 on their web site, and $150 on Ebay, and claimes PM sold out, even when PM still has it available, and NO limit to buy each person . I just bought several from PM to get free shipping.
pull my trigger and ordered 3 without shipping charge. I expect this coin will be popular... 372 available when I checked out!
Plus the mintage is OK at 6,000; plus coin dealers are jacking up the price when its still available at PM... all signs are linked to 'popular' BTW, another 10 killed and 362 available now... lol
