A quote I just saw from a Greek woman being interviewed by sky news: "if they raise our taxes how can we pay them with the little pension we recieve?"
Question for members with personal knowledge - is the Greek pension taxable income, or is she just mistaken? Or was she referring to consumption style taxes?
Gp it depends on how much your pension is. Up to 12,000 euro is tax exempt but depending on what assets you own, houses, land, then you have to lodge a return. Depending on how good your accountant is in Greece you can get away with most things. Remember not many Greeks have jobs on the books like in Australia, i.e. being paid monthly/fortnightly via bank account, mostly only international companies + greek based corporations pay like this. If you are paid under this arrangement you get taxed each paycheck kinda like our payg system. Greece has a large black economy where many jobs are done via tax, these people avoid taxes like the plague.
"The most basic problem with Greece: the Greek mentality" I disagree. The the problem is financial criminals in the Government who paid hundreds of millions in fees to the scum at Goldman Sachs to fiddle with the numbers to get Greece into the Euro in the first place.
