Seem to recall posting a warning about EXIF data in smartphone pictures - here's a real life example of why. It hasn't been explicitly stated that EXIF data was the cause of this incident, but it's highly likely. If posting a picture to Silver Stackers (or anywhere!) ensure that you don't have location services enabled for the camera on your phone. I've had to scrub pictures on here before that contained the GPS coordinates of private residences when members posted pics of their stash.
Step 1: Find GPS location of Chuck Norris's Cabin Step 2: Find pictures of da booty online (not that kind of booty you fool! ) Step 3: Edit pictures with above mentioned GPS location Step 4: ??? Step 5: Profit!
Some tools to remove EXIF data: http://davidcrowell.com/jstrip/ http://www.digitalconfidence.com/downloads.html There are also online websites that allow you to remove one by one (use Google to find).
ahhh just plagiarize other pics - send the criminal next door good find GP... how about an 'auto-scrub' script? there will always be the one here n there ignorant to technology (i.e. digital fingerprint), still babies to internet
I know this is probably in the personal responsibility domain though any way you can implement a batch process to run every night on the server to remove EXIF meta data from files in the uploaded images folder?
Depends on what the server supports. Should be possible with something like the following judging by the comment. http://www.php.net/manual/en/imagick.stripimage.php
I dont think it GP responsiability to keep cleaning or scrubbing up members mistakes. The above post is why Really think each member should understand the risks there bring upon themselves and other location family members. A hourly/daily scripted/batched scrub is fine fallback but honestly be proactive and not reactive No doubt you already are during meets or sales - just extend the same safty to your posts When two Gorilla's with clubs are looking for the 'shiny stuff' in your house, you'll wish to have been more careful.
I'd have thought getting gd installed would be easier than ImageMagick. I know it is for me anyway . Just putting it out there as another option.
ag, everyone starts somewhere, even though most members have been warned by GP now and then, they either tend to forget or newbies signing up don't know (considering this forum attracts not only younger gen but those wrinkly ones like redback and ladybug). can always flood inbox request to webhost to support if they dont - surely there are enuff here to churn nags out anyway this now goes out of my league PHP++ is for losers every knows html is best thanks in advance for auto-script GP and fishball
Had a simular thing happen on another forum I am a member of, result was as has been suggested, server now scrubs the data, this however only works for files stored on the server, not all other sites scrub the data as such people still need to be vigilant, there is some free software around that does it, or for those that have photoshop it can be used to do it as well, creating a batch process to strip it in photoshop makes it even easier
