I've had a silver koala coin in a water dispenser for more than 6 months and it looks as good as new. I don't think water is the issue so much as what may be in solution with the water. Continuous immersion in pure water doesn't seem to have any effect.

    Thanks Zekealot

Would someone be able to just clarify if I need to put the Silica Gel Bags in the zip locks withi the silver or would putting them into the aliminium box be good enough. I guess they don't cuase the silver any damage so eithe ris fine?

Did it purify your water? Were you intending to use it as an anti-bacterial or just dropped it in and couldn't get it out?

^^^ this (corr.) tarnish = silver sulfide

But the presence of oxygen is needed for the chemical reaction to form silver sulfide. So, no oxygen = no tarnish :)

Dig a hole in the ground...anywhere...even the desert, and eventually it will fill with water.

If your container isn't heavy enough (weighed down with enough metal) or have too much air in it, it'll pop out of the ground. No matter how much dirt you put on top of it, it'll eventually wriggle to the surface...

presenting itself as a fantastic freebee to anyone that finds it first!

Ironically, underground cache bouyancy has been a long term problem for doomsday preppers.

I never really considered this, but it makes perfect sense!

I guess if you packed it tight enough with metal, and did a buoyancy test before burying, it would be OK?

Maybe...but remember it's not bouyancy of water you have to beat, it's the bouyancy of the dirt the container is in buried in.
For instance, if we assume dry gravel has a specific density of 105lbs/cubic foot, your container has to be denser than that. Good luck getting over 50kgs of silver into 1 cubic foot container! That's the challenge you have in burying anything.

I've read one account of a prepper who buried a bunch of polypipe stashes on an unocuppied hill near his home. Even up away from the water table a few weeks later, driving home on the highway he saw all his pipes standing up clear from the ground. And even from miles away, the white plastic stood out like the proverbial.

Buried caches also have a propensity to move sideways.

Many years ago, we buried some champagne at my parents place in a very tightly defined area. And after some years tried to dig it up to sample it - it couldn't be found, no matter how intensively we searched. :(

Sounds like you were either pissed when you buried it or when you tried to find it. :D

    Or both?

All good to bury. Just stay sober and take a pirate with you so he can draw you a treasure map. :)

Don't be worried about a few measly particles of dust or dirt damaging your precious metals. The guys who fetch gold & silver from sunken ship wrecks don't seem too fussed about the fact that the pms have been stored incorrectly.

If you really want some professional advise about whether dirt, etc, would be a problem, then ask Luke Chrisco for his advise. :|

Q: Just how *good* is Luke Chrisco?
A: He is like Darth Vader when he was fighting Obi Wan Kenobi, and he said, "... when I left you I was but the learner and now I am the master..."

So too, LC is the true master when it comes to hiding things underground. You & I will always be amateurs compared to him.

Luke Chrisco has been quoted as saying, "Where there's muck, there's gold." I have not yet found any silver sayings attributed to him. But at least he talks about gold.

    50kg of silver is tiny.

Go and get three PAMP boxes of 1kg bars and youve got 45kg.

I can't be bothered measuring the boxes but I'm willing to bet 90kg will fit into a cubic foot.

Please don't tell me you really believe that gravel is denser than silver?!

Now Im lost.It seems that burying your treasure is not the best of ideas.I dont have a room full of PM but I do have enough to make me wonder where to put it soon.Im not crazy about putting it someplace where I cant get my hands on it quickly,so what is one to do?Each of us has to make that decision for themselves.

Oddly enough it brings me back to when I was about 10 or so.When I got coins (mostly silver in those days)I used to hide it under the TV.There was an opening on the bottom and I could reach inside and get my cash when I wanted.Sadly my younger brother and sister saw me one day putting money in my spot.Needless to say the next time I went to count my cash it was all gone.No one fessed up to it,so I searched for a new spot.I was able to crawl under my house at that time so I got a tin box put my money in it and crawled under the house.I found a spot to bury it and marked the spot with an X.A week or so later I went back under the house but never found the spot .I tried a few times after that but it was lost for good.
