Hello there. I'm a first time purchaser of gold. I have a really, really, really basic question. If I buy Perth Mint Gold from a dealer, or from someone, should I get it with the hard plastic cover that it seems to come with sometimes? Should I take the cover off to check the coin's diameter/weight/thickness? Thanks guys! R.
Hi, Perth Mint gold coins are issued in a capsule to protect them - 9999 gold is incredibly soft, without the capsule the coins wouldn't last very long at all without being damaged and having their resale value impacted. That said, I see plenty of older year Perth Mint gold coins being sold privately out of their capsule - someone had a couple of 2010 1oz Kangaroos the other day out of their capsules, and one was scratched up - why people would remove them from their capsule is beyond me. Leave them in the capsule unless there's a genuine reason to suspect there is an issue - in which case the safest option anyway is to leave them in the capsule and get them XRF tested at a dealer, as the testing can be done through the capsule. Welcome to the forum!
^^^ nice to know that.. no need to touch the shiney to test the shiney. nice. now to find a page that explains to me how XRF works.
Could someone advise the weight of a PM 1oz airtight? Would help to be able to check a coins weight without removing it from its capsule.
Why dont you just pull it out of the capsule ? its not going to hurt the coin or the capsule unless you got kfc fingers just wipe it with a clean cloth & put it back in . I think people are a bit scared of doing it & theres no real reason you cant if your careful
I collect nuggets not coins. Keep em in 10g containers. If I wanna weigh my collection I just drop the containers on the scales and subtract 10g per container. If I had an airtight I would weigh it and provide the info for others so they wouldnt need to open/touch/wipe/sterilize their precious purchases. Sorry for trying to be helpful.
Wiping a 9999 coin can and will scratch it. Seem plenty of both gold and silver Perth Mint coins with scratches especially on Lizzies face because someone popped the capsule.
Depends if your a bullion collector or a fanatical coin collector i suppose im not convinced it would affect the value unless it was dinged or looked like it was cleaned with a scourer ..each to their own
Trust me - plenty of bullion buyers are picky about condition. Preserving condition increases liquidity.
Thanks guys for that info. That's great! So the above posts suggest the capsules can be opened and shut. Are the capsules designed to be opened and shut or are they sealed and to access the coin the seal needs to be broken? Thanks! M
They can be opened and shut ... but probably preferable not to handle coin to much, so that cleaning isn't required.
... also, if necessary to handle ... best to touch only the edge of the coin and wear clean cloth gloves
