Recently I scored the prize when it comes to the $200 gold coin series produced by the RAM. The 2004, 2005, 2006 $200 Rare Bird Series coins. Mintages of 922, 400 and 997 respectively. Planned mintage had been 2500 a piece but gold wasn't popular back then ;)

I present... the Cassowary, Mallee Fowl and the Red Tailed Black Cockatoo for your viewing pleasure. The Jarrah Box set was produced up to a limit of 300. Not sure if all were sold but the limiting coin is the Mallee fowl at 400 mintage. It's a rare one alright...

    They were also done in 1/3 oz / 25mm / $150 FV

I looked at 'em when they were released, but had blown the budget elsewhere, so it was not to be :(

    McDonald has the mintages @ 987, 923, & 997 resp. for the $200,

    and 1017, 886, & 996 resp. for the $150

    :)

Almost bought a set of these at the Downies auction on Tuesday.

Went for below spot, but above when you factor in their 19.25% buyers premium.

    Anyone have one.... ?

I just completed the proof as well as the uncirculated Koala set from 1980 to 1994 (Tasmanian Devil)
Took me 5 years to complete both sets and then I accidently sold the Charles and Di coin which left me with an incomplete uncirculated set. Bugger! :(
I will pick up another Charles and Di coin eventually however if there is anyone in Sydney who wants to trade their 1981 coin for another year let me know. I have a few 1980 Koalas and a Proof Commonwealth Games that I can swap.

Catalogue value is $595 from memory but you can generally pick up for not much over spot.

I would be very surprised if there are more than 100 collectors throughout Australia with a complete collection so if you want to join our exclusive club start stacking these bargain priced coins. :)
At the moment these coins are seriously underpriced. You are looking at paying less than 10% above spot for a coin with mintages as low as 3000

Great stop loss on these $200 gold coins. Only rivalled by the $10 state series.

Put me down in the UNC club, I don't bother with the proofs and those bulky boxes! Plus the later UNCs have the lowest mintages.

I'd love to know how many of each still exist in the original packaging, lots have been broken out and melted down over the years.

    well let's see......

    - the series finished in 1994 - collectors seem to be most interested in a series that is still being manufactured....

    - subject matter on coins would mostly only be interesting to Australians - limited audience appeal

    - 22k - attracts gst and these days most people seem to want 9999

    - odd fractional - 10gms of 22k - not a nice even number

    what's not to like ? :/
