Although it's not comparable in many ways, I find it interesting that the attempts of allowing states to create their own (not necessarily PM-backed) currencies coincides with the decay of the Euro, which was exactly the opposite idea. It's nearly impossible to foresee (or only imagine) which effects this could have, but definitely worth a thought...

There's a very vital message in this that most have over looked. The states in the US petitioning for this precious metal currency have also only looked to base this currency on Weight & finesse. Over looking face value and mintages. Ie premiums.

I would start hedging my purchases at no more than +10 over spot as opposed to +100%. Attempts to recoup
In the future may prove futile. Sellers and buyers selling and paying based on mintages are collectors trading in a collectors market. That market could be made imaginary very soon. If it isn't already.

I was obviously responding to spannermonkey about his pics.

You will have to wait in line for hate mail tickets.
    You are forgiven.

Nice observation, but .... i dont expect that USD lose status at home ground first. I have seen this before happened that local currency get dumped and other currency comes on her place. If he get competition in states, fall of usd will be much faster than everyone can expect. If the bills r passed this will be just introducing of new gold/silver/platinum backed USD.
IMHO if US need to chose between CNY becoming reserve currency and gold backed USD, choice is obvious, but i also dont think that Obama can do it, he already use all his credits.Black president will became black page in Usa history, this was his destiny from the begging.

Nice post. Money is a collective mental agreement. Our money has no precise definition and is blurred by the complicated terminology. The history of currency in the U.S. is much more fractious than individuals realize and a number of towns have been printing their own alternative currencies recently. Many states are starting to also, and the notion of an alternative to the dollar is getting traction, whether merited or not. Alternative currency proposals increasing. The advantage of alternative currencies is that it keeps the flow of currency, goods and services within the community that creates it. The disadvantage is the same reason that a uniform currency was created to begin with: namely that it can't be used everywhere.
