I think the offset stem & the 1 is the easiest indicator both next to each other & clearly not the same
All these fake threads are freakin' me out. Just had to dig out 25 milkies to satisfy my paranoia. Fortunately all is well. Has anyone ever seen any fake Phils getting around yet?
This seller was so easy to avoid from feedback, it's not funny. Had not sold anything since 2008. No history of selling, or buying, any coins or bullion - just various junk. Suddenly starts listing quite an amount of silver! ALARM BELLS!
I am not freaked out about the threads regarding fakes. Rather I am very happy that people have the opportunity to see and learn what the differences are. I have checked my maples and they are all good, but they dont have milk spots (yet). People used to complain about milk spots on their maples, now they want some as confirmation that they are real.
That's just throwing the baby out with the bath water. I absolutely agree in avoiding e-bay for bullion type of stuff which is easily available from many dealers. But e-bay is very useful if you are scouting around for numi type of coins like proofs etc. Coins with case/box/coa are usually not fake - the fakers target the mass produced bullion coins. Also, just about every coin shop in the country sells on ebay - if you would be OK buying from them in person, why would you not buy from them on ebay ?
Because if I buy from them in person they don't have to pay paypal fees or eBay fees and usually that means I get a better price and they get higher profits. Win Win. Although there are exceptions... notably US stores/dealers. (Yes I know nothing to do with fakes) ps. Just to be on topic, the numi stuff isn't exactly bullet proof either. Pandas are commonly forged on eBay. DYOD always!
I have just sent the seller the following message. Warning - Counterfeit Coin! Hello, Why are you selling counterfeit coins? The coin in the picture you have listed is clearly a not genuine Canadian Maple and is certainly not .999 Silver. Have you already sold lots of these? Go to Silver Stackers.com and you will see that your listing is mentioned in a fake Maple thread. Maples are legal Canadian currency and it appears that you are selling counterfeit coins. I believe that you should remove this listing immediately and stop selling fake silver products. I wonder what he have to will say about it. :/
Wow, very nice fake work. Unless you know silver maple really well most people won't tell the difference.
Seller got one from me as well, couldn't see very well from the pic if it was fake so I asked for more pictures without the flash and suggested that there was a possibility of it being a new fake, and asked where it came from.
Yeah, lol, I think I might have been a bit hasty, your approach is better. Either way at least he knows it looks a bit suss. I might PM the buyer when it is finished and suggest that they check it out carefully or get someone who knows a bit about maples to have a look at it.
Well spotted Silver Soul. I was a little bit worried that I had jumped the gun after reading what Jislizard posted. So I went back and checked out the "A" and it definately looks suss it is clearly just like the fake pic. Check out the A guys, the crossbar is a lot lower on the fake and much more central on the original. I reckon this is so obvious even in bad pics like this guy has up. I am now very satisfied that it is one of the V Maples. (I am calling them the A Maples from now on) I am going to have another look at the A on my milkies now.
A long time ago when this forum was in it's infancy a member pursued with vigour 100 mils sellers on eBay until the member was threatened with violence. Just be sure that you are picking the fight you want. Personally I'm small fry. Some suggest that means it won't hurt as much if I get burned but I retort that it means that if I do get burned it'll hurt far more because it'd be a significant part of my meagre stack. I stick to what I can verify with my Fisch and buying from trusted site sponsors and from trusted Bullion dealers as well as members that have a reputation for being straight up.
What worries me is that after reading on this forum that it was highly unlikely that government bullion coinage would be counterfeited, it appears that there are indeed fakes amongst Canadian and Australian government coins after all. So unless buying directly from government Mints there is a risk (albeit very small) that buyers can be duped.
Apparently at least 25% of the circulating 1 Euro coins are counterfeit. That would make millions of fakes circulating in the EU. Seems they cant be stopped in coinage.
What are the chances of maples from APMEX being fake? With 100's of these going in and out a day would it be possible for buyers to be assured they're real simply because they're from a reputable firm?
Very slim chance I'd say. Reputation is everything. Even a sniff of fakes and they'd be outa business.
Seems the "A Maple" Ebay guy has probably been caught out himself. I got a reply. Well i shall go and see the shop i brought these from in Adelaide then and at least i show real photos of the stuff i sell unlike some.... i was unaware and still believe mine to be real as i brought it from a real supplier My reply, Cool mate, Sorry if my message was a bit harsh. Yes it is true that you show what you sell and that is honest of you. I am pretty sure the one in the pic is suss. Compare the A's in Canada to other listing photos, you will see the difference. There are a few other tell tale signs also. I hope you can get a full refund. Good luck. Funny thing is, when I saw I had a message from him I clicked on it and it skipped to another message and the first thing I saw was; Your address is XX XXXXXXXXXXX XX XXXXXXX XX XXXX I thought oh f... now the mafia / bikies are coming to visit. It was really just Gerry confirming my postal address before sending out a coin.
