Hi, I just bought a few of 1oz PAMP Gold and since im going to move overseas. I bring every valuable things with me. I was just wondering if anybody ever bring gold bar through the airport security? Is it beeping when you pass through the metal detector thing ? Does the airport security gives you trouble ? Would be great if anybody can share their experiences. Thank you
if you just take it out and show them straight up they dont usually hassle you...most of the time they are more interested in the shiney stuff and want to hold it!!!
its money what do you do with your money when you go through the scanner? throw it into the tray wiht your loose change and off you go
Tape the bars to your body so it looks like you're importing bricks of gold cocaine. or Keep it in your bag and let it through the scanner as projack suggested. If it's over 10k worth, I would suggest reporting it and telling them you're moving overseas... I don't know how the 10k reporting limit applies to PM, I would hazard a guess that it's treated the same as cash, or else criminals would be using this as a loophole. Anyone know what the stance is on this? I've always wondered.
I think you're right. I never take that much since I always wire my cash first when I go overseas so I never bother to look at it in detail.
Thanxs for the advice. My gold bullion is still in PAMP packaging thingie. Hope they dont hassle me around ><.
Just report it as you go through. I am sure the airport security will give less than a damn about it in all honesty. Make sure you put it in your hand luggage though, you'd be silly to trust it in your suitcases (ie out of sight) I am sure they see much larger value ticket items daily.
I even went through on a scanner in the US that picked up a tiny nail in my jogger shoe, which was much smaller than the smallest office staple you can find. I had no idea these shoes have metal in them and no other scanner ever picked it up on an around the world trip.
I believe they have several settings, yours was probably set to "paranoid" Wrap it in a condom and and hide it in your bum ;p worked in pulp fiction right?
There is a separate customs form called a Cross-Border Movement - Bearer Negotiable Instrument (CBM-BMI), which is different to the usual Cross-Border Movement - Physical Currency (CBM-PC) form that you fill in if you've got more than $10k on you. You'd be filling in either one or the other (I don't know which one covers PMs), so maybe call Customs beforehand and ask them. This stuff falls under the Anti-money laundering/terrorist financing laws so you really don't want to get into an argument with the customs people at the airport gate.
think this topic has come up elsewhere and it seemed nobody actually knew so I took a roo through domestic it beeped
magnetic and electrical fields are at the heart of modern airport metal detection, it seems I've noticed that certain alloys are now walkable - such as the ordinary belt buckle highly electrically conductive metals include gold, silver and copper are, not surprisingly, detectable, when a magnetic field is applied to them it doesn't take Einstein to determine that a sprayable coat will repel the field
