There isn't any taxes on precious metal (gold, silver, platinum) imports. This is just a case of Fedex being clueless about Australian customs and tax laws (and thus attempting to apply import duties/taxes on them as if they were another type of good). Australian coins (kooks, lunars) etc. are still much more of a bargain here (on average) than in the US. I've ordered from APMEX a few times but never "from" Australia. Always used my US card and got it shipped to my US address (and picked it up next time I'm in the country). That way I don't have to worry about their ridiculously high minimum order figures for international purchases. I live ~1 mile from the RAM. I'm not a numi collector myself so I don't visit all that often, but let me know if you ever desperately need anything over the counter. Would be happy to act as a forwarder. (Plus I'm a dual US/Aussie citizen so I'm in the US a couple of times a year too, so can sometimes even just put stuff in the luggage and post it domestically once I land in the US - cheap!)
the government got twin engines VACUUM Money Cleaner... even the heaviest bars will be moved up.
Update: Reason For Delay: Recommended Action: 1. Description provided is insufficient to classify commodity. Shipper or Importer must provide a more detailed description of goods. 2. Arrangement for duties and taxes is required. Importer must agree to provide payment of duties and taxes. I paid an amount ~$200 in GST for an order that was 50oz in silver. Rather than waiting for them to hold my parcel, whilst i argue that Silver Bullion is GST Exempt, i figured would be easier to just pay it, then get i back from the ATO. Is this the right option?
It's not the G.S.T you should be concerned with it's the indirect tax...a completely different term..precious metals are input taxed at 0 % because they are g.s.t exempt in Australia...the customs site explains everything you need to know..www.customs.au..I just received nearly $10,000 of silver bullion from ampex and only paid the custom handling fees $55...
No attempt to charge G.S.T just $55 handling fee...But I had sent fedex email in advance telling them I would be expecting package that is classified G.S.T exempt and attached relevant paper work form customs site..
I wont be purchasing from them again. Just got slogged with import tax. All too much trouble for little gain.
I am in the process of getting my $200 GST back, i noticed on their email, they have a little notice: "insert name here" Customs Support Representative FedEx Australia Ph: 1800111112 / Fax: 02 8571 9301 Please note: As at the 1st Dec 09, all Customs Entries requiring any amendment that are a Non-FedEx error will incur a Processing Fee of $132.00 Assuming they are trying to deter people chasing refunds.
I ordered from APMEX about a week ago. Fedex phoned me yesterday advising there was close to AUD500 in GST. (On a couple of gold lunars and 6 silver BU pandas.) I advised they were bullion coins and GST free. Call centre guy said Fedex would get back to me. Nothing so far. I have resigned myself to paying GST and lodging an ATO private ruling. Most comprehensive and comprehensible info I have seen on SS so far is following thread. (ATO language is denser than legal language!) http://forums.silverstackers.com/to...ly-for-a-private-gst-ruling-from-the-ato.html
